Position Custom Scope
Reporting to the Skilled Crafts Trades Supervisor in the Facilities Services Maintenance Department, the Lead Sheet Metal Welder performs journey-level work related sheet metal fabrication and welding. This position oversees critical day-to-day operations in the supervisor's absence and acts as a subject matter expert who provides leadership to team members. The Lead Sheet Medal Welder is responsible for operating and training others on: equipment, methods, materials used to perform various welding projects throughout the University of California, Riverside campus. This position may work independently or as part of a team and responds to emergency situations during or after hours to mitigate and/or resolve immediate concerns and correct safety issues. Maintains a positive attitude for the team and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

Sheetmetal/Welding Fabrication: Fabricates, assembles, and repairs sheet metal products and equipment. Including the installation of prefabricated sheet metal ducts used for: heating and ventilating systems, alarms, plumbing, electrical panels, etc. per project specifications. Welds parts to form complete units or subunits while following blueprints and layout specifications with the appropriate use of trade tools. Fabricates metal products such as: framework, HVAC components, environmental systems, and specified parts for projects according to job order, verbal instructions, and/or blue prints. | 50 % | Sheetmetal/Welding Maintenance: Develops shop drawings for the design and manufacturing of sheet metal products. Selects gauges and types of sheet metal or nonmetallic material according to product specifications. Develops patterns that use materials most efficiently using computerized metal working equipment. Develops sequential plans of operations accounting for material thickness, welding shrinkage, and physical properties of metal. Arranges and ensures the welded parts are in order before assembled into final product. Sets up and operates fabricating machines, soldering, and welding equipment to form and assemble metal components. Performs routine maintenance work on all machines and equipment to ensure they are operating at full capacity. Performs all work following appropriate safety procedures such as: transporting materials, hauling, loading, lifting, operating power tools, digging (trenches), excavating, etc. in preparation of the project. | 20 % | Lead Sheetmetal/Welder Responsibilities: Leads, guides, clarifies instructions, and acts as a subject matter expert. Makes recommendations on staff, equipment, materials and other sources of cost savings and efficiency improvements. Trains new team members on campus systems, procedures, and methods. Establishes and maintains a high level of professionalism that supports collaboration and problem solving while building strong working relationships with customers, colleagues, contractors, and campus partners. Performs job walks, provides scope work, develops estimates for labor and material, removals, isometrics drawings, and plans in accordance with appropriate code requirements. Oversees the maintenance of tools and equipment. Ensures the safe operation of equipment and that all members are following safety procedures correctly. Provides administrative support by processing work order requests and prepares written documentation in a clear and concise manner. Submits purchase requests through the eBuy system. May oversee work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with campus procedures and safety guidelines. | 10 % | Shop Support: Performs computer input of keeping record of labor and materials used in work performed. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing, and maintenance performed. Updates equipment documentation and specifications as needed. Interprets prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements. Consults with supervisor when needed. Supports maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments. Adheres to the scheduling and completion of work assignments through the work order system. Participates in safety and other trainings as required.
