Basic Function

Join LyondellBasell "LYB" in leading the overall execution of strategic capital projects that drive our core businesses and growth strategy. As a Project Director, you'll lead large integrated projects valued at over $1 billion with complex elements such as joint ventures, new technologies, or unique geographies. Project complexity stems from seniority level of stakeholders, number of external organizations engaged, novel execution strategies, fabrication and procurement in varied geographies/locations, and the projects' overall size. The role requires formation of, and successful execution within, Joint Venture environments with sophisticated multinational partners including alignment of senior stakeholder groups across multiple companies. You will have oversight of several project leaders and multiple project areas comprising an integrated facility. Such projects are not typical of those performed by the major capital execution team and require diverse skills and experience, including strong strategic business formation focus. Accountability includes strategic and tactical matters associated with the project execution and commences during the bid development phase and continues through start-up and commissioning.

The position requires significant interaction with stakeholders, Joint Venture parties, strategic partners, technology licensors, EPCms, and suppliers and sub-contractors appropriate to the size of investment to ensure effective coordination across all involved and delivery on corporate commitments. The role interfaces extensively with core business leadership, executive levels of various partners, suppliers and contractors to ensure alignment of highest-level project objectives. Success requires global execution focus, line of sight from business objectives to project outcomes, and strong cross-cultural competency. Additionally, the ability to act as a senior leader, accomplishing objectives through empowerment of other project leaders, and ability to foster One-Team approach across organizations.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • During Project Development, establish Execution strategies for execution, procurement, construction, and start-up. Additionally, work with Joint Venture organizations to establish arrangements such as Project Management Principles, Integrated Project Management Team definitions etc. Provide guidance and expertise in definition of complex partnership agreements that are atypical for major capital execution. Ensure internal and external business case Stakeholders understand risks and responsibilities associated with Joint Venture and mega-project execution. Define the project scope and budget and present results in a clear, concise, manner. Project scope includes engineering, design, equipment procurement, construction procurement, construction management, plant commissioning and start-up, environmental permitting, etc.
  • Act as Leader or "face of the project" to internal and external stakeholders and positively represent project organization inside LyondellBasell and externally. Represent LyondellBasell Global Projects in a positive, ethical, manner to the highest levels of the organization.
  • Champion LyondellBasell Global Projects' Journey to Best in Class delivery methodology adjusting as needed to accommodate Joint Venture Partners and non-standard execution methods. Act as a mentor to others with the larger Global Projects group with consistent support for working inside the model in typical cases.
  • Become an active member of the Global Project Leadership Team and provide strategic direction for GP. Includes active participation in leadership forums beyond direct Project support and support for GP initiatives outside of main project focus
  • Oversight and direction of all project execution activities, including overall cost, schedule, and plant performance related to the project assigned
  • Develop and lead a high-performing project team that includes not only the core LyondellBasell's project members, other owner company functions, external partners, vendors, and equipment vendors. Able to bring a team together for a common goal through appropriate motivation, engagement and delegation
  • Overall management of all aspects affiliated to the project performed by LyondellBasell and affiliate partners including work done within and across Global Projects, as well as supporting functions such as Manufacturing, Procurement, HSE, Project Controls, HR, Finance, Legal and Corporate Affairs
  • Providing guidance to other project leaders working within the team as Project or Area Delivery managers while remaining directly accountable to Stakeholders
  • Accountability for review of execution strategies and decision-making processes as required. Lead the internal and/or external problem-solving necessary to arrive at appropriate decisions even with limited information
  • Act to facilitate consensus within a Joint Venture framework and ensure common alignment of strategic stakeholders groups outside LyondellBasell to generate positive outcomes
  • Maintain a safe work environment and support corporate and organizational safety goals in the office, suppliers, and fabrication and field sites.
  • Ensure Project Controls and Risk Management procedures are followed, and any issues resolved.

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, project or construction management or closely related technical field
  • Project Management Professional or similar certification preferred
  • Registered Professional Engineer or other certification a plus
  • Typically, 20+ years prior experience delivering major capital projects in the Chemical, Petrochemical, Refining, or equivalent industry in the US Gulf Coast or Middle East
  • Experience working in/on Joint Venture or Partnership execution Projects
  • Strong history of increasing responsibility of team leadership, demonstrating ability to act as inspirational leader in capital deployment
  • International project management experience a major plus
  • English proficiency (written & spoken) required
  • Dutch, German, Italian and/or French a plus
  • Must be purpose driven, highly organized and flexible.
  • Strong understanding of major capital delivery methods and good familiarity with engineering and field subcontractors on US Gulf Coast
  • Experience in formation of, execution within or leadership of, Joint Venture or Partnering environments with major multi-national organizations
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with executive level presentation skills;
  • Requires demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Excellent team building and facilitation skills required
  • Ability to gather information and quickly develop a deep understanding of the project, business case and how to integrate with the manufacturing site
  • Must possess effective leadership capabilities to lead a diverse cross-functional teams
  • Ability to delegate complex tasks to others while maintaining good understanding of outcomes. Identify and correct underperformance when required
  • Skilled at building relationships and partnerships to deliver successful projects to the mutual benefit of the business and the operating client
  • Routinely prepare and present project updates to senior and executive leadership
