Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Study Abroad Office (
SAO) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a leader in international education, creating transformative learning experiences that support student success, safety, and personal growth. Aligned with UNC's commitment to global education, we manage a dynamic portfolio of all-encompassing and accessible programs designed for students of any academic discipline, ability, background, or financial means. Based within the College of Arts & Sciences, the Study Abroad Office is affiliated with
UNC Global and is a resource for the entire Carolina community. Annually, the
SAO serves over 2,000 students from the College of Arts & Sciences and other
UNC schools. Our offerings include student exchange, direct-enroll, partner provider, and
UNC faculty-led programs, providing rich educational experiences through coursework, internships, research, and service-learning. With a dynamic team of approximately 21 full-time professionals, we are a highly collaborative team, working together to prepare students for their international experiences and enriching their academic journeys both abroad and upon return. The
SAO manages a $30MM budget and provides over $1MM in scholarships annually to make international experiences more accessible. |
Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
One of the primary purposes of this position is to coordinate and manage the day-to-day functions of the SAO's Terra Dotta Software (
TDS) system, which serves as the Office's application system and database. Specific activities include responsibility for ongoing support of this system as one of the
SAO 'Power Users' responsible for oversight of the system, maintaining a strong working knowledge of system features, identifying and implementing new, unused, or underutilized features that meet
SAO administrative and programmatic needs, train and liaise with internal and external staff, faculty, students, , and customers to access and navigate the system. This position controls access, at various levels and designations, to this critical data management system and assigns access as deemed appropriate. This person monitors the system for issues and errors and independently resolves user issues when they arise. The position will liaise with the Terra Dotta,
UNC Arts and Sciences Information Services (
OASIS) and
UNC Information Technology Services (
ITS) to manage and ensure security compliance, trouble shoot issues, and seek technical assistance where necessary. The position is responsible for using data from
TDS and other sources to create reports for staff, faculty, university leadership, and the wider community on topics such as participation, participant experience and satisfaction, demographics, credit earned, and other metrics related to the mission of the
SAO.
The position assists with the study abroad credit transfer process, evaluating, analyzing, and interpreting international transcripts and translating academic credit from approved partner institutions into
UNC-specific academic credit and applying these credits to students'
UNC transcripts. This position liaises with the University Registrar and communicates with students and other stakeholders regarding individual credit questions or needs. This person also liaises with academic departments and various Directors of Undergraduate Studies (
DUS) to facilitate the credit transfer process and assists with managing the credit portal for students, departments, and
SAO users. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Strong writing and editing skills; attention to detail; ability to prioritize level of urgency of student and staff needs; excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to switch back and forth between tasks frequently; experience in MS Office |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience with processing credit or credit transfer, or understanding of curriculum at university or college level; knowledge of other complex software platforms and database systems, in particular People Soft or UNC's ConnectCarolina platform; advanced MS Excel and reporting creation; experience studying, living and/or working internationally is preferred; experience specifically with Terra Dotta (
TDS) software highly desired |
