Job Summary

Under the direction of the Field Research Supervisor, provide field support for safely and effectively managing a range of laboratory and field activities including long term monitoring, bathymetric surveys/mapping, sensor development and environmental robotics at the Tahoe Environmental Research Center. Primary duties will include: processing data from multibeam and sidescan sonar surveys, current profilers (ADCPs) and water quality profilers (CTDs, LISST, Thermistors, DO loggers); Operations of vessels for research such as Lake Tahoe basin long-term monitoring, sonar technologies (e.g. bathymetric, side scan, etc.), autonomous vehicles (e.g. autonomous underwater vehicles, drones, etc.), ADCP deployments and new instrumentation (both standalone and vessel mounted); Conduct a variety of field related data collections and equipment maintenance (e.g. SCUBA diving surveys for metaphyton/periphyton data collection, nearshore instrumentation calibration and maintenance, long-term monitoring data collection, stream sampling, etc.); Provide support for logistics, field operations, data processing, equipment maintenance; and student/intern supervision and training.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline, preferably hydrography, ecology, chemistry, engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience with environmental research in aquatic environments including boat based and SCUBA based research.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of specialized limnological equipment.
  • Organizational, data handling and record-keeping skills.
  • An ability to work as part of a diverse team and an ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are an essential part of this position, along with an ability to prepare high quality technical reports.
  • An ability to swim over 100 meters.

  • Motorboat Operator Training Course
  • AAUS Scientific Diver
  • First Aid Training
  • CPR Training
  • Experience with environmental research in aquatic environments.
  • Experience with data analysis, statistics and statistical software.
  • Basic coding skills with Matlab, Python or equivalent.
  • Ability to work in ArcGIS applications including ArcGIS Pro, FieldMaps, and Survey123 to create maps, surveys and other GIS outputs.

Department Overview

The Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is a Special Research Program under the Office of Research. The unit has affiliated faculty, professional researchers, adjunct professors, academic and staff support personnel from all colleges and schools on the UC Davis campus to collaborate on environmental issues of interest to policy makers, agency personnel and academics TERC is located at both Lake Tahoe and on the Davis main campus. TERC is dedicated to research, education and public outreach on lakes and their surrounding watersheds and airsheds. TERC provides critical scientific information to help understand, restore, and sustain the Lake Tahoe Basin and other lake systems worldwide. TERC conducts environmental research in aquatic and terrestrial environments at Lake Tahoe, and multiple other locations throughout California and globally.

Under the direction of the TERC director and field lab supervisor, this position is to engage in complex research projects in support of limnology, hydrology, aquatic ecology, and atmospheric science undertaken by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) at Lake Tahoe and other research locations. As a representative of TERC and UC Davis, the position will engage in public outreach through public presentations, government agency forums, stakeholder meetings, and media presentations. Help support, train and mentor graduate students, research and education staff, principal investigators and visiting scientists as needed.

Work Environment
