Overview This position is Sign-on Bonus eligible. The Medical Assistant performs a full range of duties necessary to support the care of patients from birth through the lifecycle. He or she works under the direction of Physicians, the Site Manager and/or Practice Coordinator to assist with appropriate patient needs including education and communication. Major Responsibilities 1. Prepares the patient at the onset of the visit
- Measures and records vital signs, height, and weight as necessary.
- Determines patient's chief complaint and records in medical record.
- Asks patient about relevant past medical history and records in the medical record.
2. Assists the physician with procedures and examinations as needed
- Sets up the procedure/exam room with appropriate supplies/equipment. Prepares the patient for exam/procedure.
- Maintains sterile technique and field during sterile procedures. Cleans exam room post patient encounter.
- Properly cleans and disinfects instruments and prepares for sterilization.
- Provides emotional and other clinical support to patient during exam as indicated.
3. Assists the physician in the provision of patient and family education 4. Answers general questions
- Provides instructional materials.
- Responds to patient calls by relaying between the provider and patient. Documents instructions appropriately.
5. Performs clerical duties as necessary Files reports in patient records.
- Locates and pulls files for patient visits and returns files to shelf. Performs duties using IDX as applicable.
- Performs insurance verification, referrals and precertification as required.
- Obtains billing waivers from patients as appropriate.
6. Provides nursing care for the patient as directed by the physician
- Administers medications per provider orders.
- Performs waived lab procedures.
- Performs other procedures ordered as noted on skill check list.
7. Maintains accurate medical records
- Completes documentation related to patient visit.
- Documents medications.
- Documents all medication orders called in to pharmacies. Documents referrals and pre-certifications appropriately.
8. Communicates clearly and appropriately with team members, providers and patients Communicates
- complete timely information to team members.
9. Completes accurate coding of medical and laboratory procedures Completes encounter form correctly.
- Verifies procedures that may be billed as "in-house".
- Maintains accurate knowledge of CPT codes of commonly performed services. Verifies diagnosis and procedures are matched for claims filing.
10. Provides age-appropriate care to patients
- Measurement of vital signs, height and weight are performed using equipment appropriate for the age of the patient.
- Medication dosage and method of administration is age appropriate.
- Techniques and equipment used in procedures are age appropriate.
- Demonstrates teaching techniques and uses materials in teaching which are age appropriate.
- Uses safety measures in patient care which are appropriate for age of patient.
Minimum Job Requirements Education High School Diploma or equivalent Medical Assistant diploma/certificate from a nationally recognized, accredited program OR Graduate from an accredited School of Practical Nursing OR Completion of a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces Certification / License Nationally recognized and accredited current Medical Assistant certification BCLS certification Work Experience -1 year of equivalent work experience required
