Director of Participant Engagement
Job Summary We seek a highly motivated and collaborative Academic Program Officer to independently oversee a participant engagement program to support several research studies within the UCSF Department of Neurology related to autoimmune disease and mental health. Participants include patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other key research stakeholders.
As director of the participant engagement program, the Academic Program Officer will:
- Maximize participant engagement through the application of health literacy principles designed to make care and research interventions useful, understandable, actionable and universally accessibility.
- Lead qualitative research efforts, eliciting patient and clinician feedback, analyzing data, and mentoring staff on the use of technologies to facilitate analyses.
- Develop integrated communication, publicity, and dissemination strategies, including newsletters and plain language summaries, designed to promote longitudinal engagement, increase awareness, and build support for future research initiatives.
- Engage patients, clinicians, researchers, and technical experts to iteratively improve health- and care-related interventions and translate user feedback into product features.
The Academic Program Officer will:
- Represent the program to outside organizations, including collaborators, funders, and others. The Academic Program Officer will collaborate closely with national organizations, such as the MS Society, with external researchers, philanthropy organizations, and clinical and administrative stakeholders in neurology at UCSF and throughout the country.
- Oversee all administrative operations, finance, and human resources associated with participant engagement activities. The Academic Program Officer will direct participant engagement activitivies for approximately two clinical research coordinators and five trainees per year, for projects in the area of neurology.
- Design and develop major participant engagement program components, and administer the full range of the program's operational requirements. The Academic Program Officer will be responsible for devising, in collaboration with investigators, the scientific content of participant surveys, which include a range of patient-reported outcomes. The Academic Program Officer will work with investigators at UCSF and at collaborating sites to enhance study recruitment, and develop communications designed to keep participants and key stakeholders abreast of study progress.
- Work under direction of Principal Investigator to establish participant engagement program strategy, funding, and objectives which may include developing and organizing conferences and other public forums.
- Collaborate with faculty on formulating short-term planning and procedures. The Academic Program Officer will participate in weekly team meetings, support development of progress reports, manuscripts, and abstracts, as well as review budgets, participate in discussions about scientific direction, consult on hiring and retaining research staff, and perform other operational tasks as needed.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $166,900 (Annual Rate). In addition to delivering the best possible patient care, the department is committed to advancing medical understanding of the causes of neuroinflammatory disease and to looking for potential cures. UCSF is a top recipient of research funding from the National Institutes of Health and National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Part of the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, the UCSF Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroinflammation Center is one of California's premier programs for evaluating, diagnosing and treating adult and pediatric patients with inflammatory diseases of the nervous system. The Center and its clinics serve as a hub for research conducted by department faculty and Bove Lab staff. The Academic Program Officer would become an integral part of the Bove Lab, directing participant engagement program strategy and strategic communications to promote dissemination and adoption of BRIDGE and funded research initiatives. Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in public health, health administration, or other relevant field for clinical research, and 15 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a research environment, working with investigators to initiate and execute study procedures for studies, including human subjects research.
- Minimum 10 years of health literacy and/or plain language experience designing strategic interventions for application within care or research settings.
- Advanced knowledge of qualitative and mixed research methodologies.
- Advanced knowledge of behaviorial science principles and demonstrated experience applying principles to enhance UX design of digital health tools.
- Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
- Advanced oral and written communication skills.
- Advanced ability to think strategically, creatively, and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
- Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
- Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
- Grant-writing experience, including compiling proposals and working on progress reports to federal agencies
- Significant prior leadership experience.
- Knowledge and experience working in the area of autoimmunity, including MS

- Highly skilled fundraising experience.
- Demonstrated record of excellent attendance and punctuality
