We are seeking an experienced Senior Nonprofit Accountant with a strong background in managing grants to join our finance team. This position will play a key role in ensuring accurate and efficient financial management, compliance with federal, state, and private grant requirements, and the preparation of financial statements for our nonprofit organization. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and a proven ability to manage complex grant reporting and budgeting processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Grant Accounting & Compliance:

    • Manage all financial aspects of grants, including preparation, reporting, and compliance with donor restrictions, federal and state regulations.
    • Oversee the accounting for restricted funds and ensure proper allocations according to grant agreements.
    • Ensure accurate and timely submission of financial reports to funders and stakeholders as required.
    • Maintain compliance with grant terms and conditions, including meeting deadlines and ensuring proper documentation is in place.
    • Coordinate with program managers to track grant expenditures and ensure funds are used according to the budget and funder guidelines.
  • Financial Reporting:

    • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
    • Review and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and consistency across all financial records.
    • Assist in the preparation of the organization's annual budget, financial forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Audit & Tax Support:

    • Coordinate with external auditors during the annual audit process, ensuring that financial records and statements are accurate and comply with auditing standards.
    • Prepare schedules and documentation required for audit, including grant schedules and supporting documentation for restricted funds.
    • Support tax filing processes (Form 990, 990-T, etc.) and ensure compliance with nonprofit tax regulations.
  • Internal Controls & Policies:

    • Develop and implement effective internal controls to safeguard the organization's financial assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
    • Recommend improvements to accounting systems, procedures, and reporting for efficiency and compliance.
    • Assist in the review and development of policies and procedures related to accounting, grants, and financial reporting.
  • Grant Budgeting and Forecasting:

    • Assist program managers in the preparation and submission of grant proposals and budgets.
    • Provide ongoing budget monitoring, including identifying and communicating variances to program staff and leadership.
  • Team Leadership & Collaboration:

    • Mentor and support junior accounting staff and provide guidance on accounting practices and grant management.
    • Collaborate with other departments (e.g., development, programs) to ensure seamless integration of financial and grant-related data.
    • Participate in finance department meetings and contribute to the strategic direction of the organization's financial planning.

  • the individual's skill sets, experience and training;
  • licensure and certification requirements;
  • office location and other geographic considerations;

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
