The Counseling Center is part of the MU Student Health and Well-Being unit, which includes the Counseling Center, Student Health Center, and Wellness Resource Center. The Center is an APA-accredited doctoral internship site and serves a multiculturally diverse and international student community. The Counseling Center focuses on multicultural competence, affirmation and inclusive excellence, and the staff seeks like-minded professionals to join a team engaged in efforts to enhance campus services to better support all students.

Job Description

Essential Functions
The successful candidate will have a "generalist" competence and experience in the treatment of a wide variety of diagnoses and life problems. In addition, MUCC clinicians are encouraged to assume expertise in specific areas of personal interest including a mode of service delivery, clinical issue/need, and/or work with a specific identity group on campus. While candidates should not exclude themselves from consideration for a position, preference will be given to applicants demonstrating experience and skill set in the following areas:

  • Substance use/recovery services
  • Autism spectrum disorders and/or ADHD
  • Complex anxiety including OCD
  • Racial Identity Based Trauma/work with BIPOC students
  • Eating Disorders/body image

Inquiries and applications are encouraged from professionals representative of all aspects of diversity as well as from persons possessing a range of levels of professional experience.

Job Duties Include:

  • Complete culturally competent initial evaluations to determine appropriate treatment recommendations.
  • Provide culturally competent therapeutic interventions including brief individual and group therapy as well as time limited workshop series to treat a broad range of presenting psychological concerns and diagnoses.
  • Perform crisis and consultation services during regular business hours that require complex clinical decision making as part of a crisis team.
  • Design and implement outreach and prevention programming to students and the broader campus community.
  • Conduct supervision and training for post-doctoral residents, doctoral interns in our APA-accredited doctoral internship, post-Masters fellows, and graduate students in training (as allowed by licensure status).
  • Contribute as a member of the MUCC team to the development and implementation of goals, philosophies, policies, and procedures for meeting the psychological needs of the University of Missouri students and cultivating a culture of well-being on campus. Serve on relevant MUCC and/or University committees as requested.
  • Performs assignments and responsibilities of varying degrees of complexity, diversity, and visibility, serving as a lead on these assignments and responsibilities
  • Possesses an in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in the Counseling Center and other related functions
  • Has knowledge of best practices and concepts in the Counseling Center function and how own area integrates with other functions
  • Works within broad guidelines and policies, providing input to policy development and improvement
  • Understands the impact of external factors on own work and function
  • Conducts comprehensive health assessments and demonstrates a high level of autonomy and skill in the diagnosis and treatment of actual and potential health problems
  • Solves highly complex problems and analyses, taking a new perspective on existing solutions
  • Exercises judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information, determining gaps, providing recommendations, etc.
  • Mentors less experienced colleagues
  • May lead medium/large projects with manageable risks and resource requirements
  • Impacts a range of customer, operational, project or service activities within own team and other related teams both inside and outside the function/department
  • Effectively explains difficult or sensitive information and works to build consensus
  • Regularly collaborates with others inside and outside functional area

The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal, oral, and written skills; value a multifaceted approach involving linked clinical and training efforts; show a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, campus partners, and student groups; have a commitment to actively engage in practice with diverse populations; interpersonal flexibility with a sense of humor; an awareness of the importance of life balance and a commitment to the importance of the developmental perspective of counseling services.

Shift

This position is available by early August 2025; specific date may be negotiable for a summer start.

This position is 40 hours per week and may require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

A Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology and 2 years of experience in counseling. Must be eligible for licensure in the state of Missouri. Provisional Licensure will not be accepted as the clinician must be able to practice independently.

Preferred Qualifications

Five years of full-time post-degree clinical experience.

Additionally, a minimum of one year of clinical experience working in a college counseling center (this may include practica, internship or post-doctoral experience) is desired.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $90,000-$115,000 annually if already licensed in any jurisdiction, depending on experience and other qualifications.

Grade: GGS 12
