Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Communications Coordinator to support its Facilities and Operations (F&O) directorate and its efforts to enable efficient execution of the ORNL science missions while maintaining facilities and infrastructure, delivering custom research support, and providing 24/7 utility and security support. The individual in this position will support communications within the directorate as well as communications on behalf of F&O to the Lab population, sponsors, and other stakeholders. Primary directorate functions that may require support include laboratory protection, integrated operations, logistics, facilities management, utilities, fabrication and instrumentation, and lab modernization. The position reports up through the Communications and Community Engagement Directorate (CCED).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Recommend effective strategies and best practices for communicating F&O news and information within the F&O directorate and to ORNL managers and staff.

  • Work with F&O and CCED to develop and execute communications plans and deliverables that reach targeted audiences. Themes include research support; service offerings and changes; safety; community; and workforce development.

  • Engage regularly with F&O leadership in order to support their individual needs, share communications priorities, gather feedback, and modify as necessary.

  • Gather data through regular customer engagement to help identify and drive strategies.

  • Collaborate with CCED peers when efforts, messages, or audiences overlap.

  • Work with designated F&O, IT, and CCED staff to ensure that F&O websites are effective, up to date, and align with ORNL web design standards.

  • Write and/or assign others to draft content for ORNLToday, Performance Monday, Safety Toolbox, and other ORNL internal communications tools and/or promote through events and/or learning opportunities to deliver content for employee consumption.

  • Benchmark other national laboratories and industry leaders to bring new communications ideas and solutions forward to F&O leadership.

  • Collaborate with Creative Services to secure writing and editing support and adhere to ORNL grammar and style standards.

  • Suggest visual material in support of scientific and technical information needs. Work with designers, illustrators, photographers, and videographers to develop attractive and impactful visual products.

  • Comply with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL's core values and ethics.

Qualifications Required:

  • BS degree in communications, journalism, English and/or complementary field of study with 7+ years of professional experience managing employee communications products and tools for large, diverse organizations. Equivalent education and experience will be considered. Candidates will be expected to share a portfolio of their work.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with senior leaders and managers

  • Strong written and oral communications skills

  • Experience managing or mentoring communications professionals

  • The ability to plan and execute communications strategies, prioritize and meet deadlines, work independently and with all levels of management and staff in a team-based environment; learn new information quickly; understand, follow, and implement complex instructions; and manage projects from concept to completion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSdegree in communications, business, English, or a related field and 10+ years of experience.

  • Experience in operations communications for the manufacturing, utilities, scientific, nuclear, or other highly technical fields of work

  • Proven experience in data collection via surveys, focus groups, etc.

  • Expertise in change management

  • Experience in a DOE laboratory

  • Excellent attention to detail; good facilitation and presentation skills; strong organizational skills, including the flexibility to simultaneously handle several assignments; strong skills in solving problems and developing and implementing solutions; and demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Adobe products.
