LOCATION OF (1) POSITION(S) TO BE FILLED: DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN'S SERVICES, JOHN S. WILDER YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER DIVISION, FAYETTE COUNTY

This classification of DCS Officer has a starting salary of $3,750 monthly/ $45,000 yearly

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants for this class must:

  1. Be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons;
  2. Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age on the date of application;
  3. Be a citizen of the United States;
  4. Have a good moral character, as determined by investigation;
  5. Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority;
  6. Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority;
  7. Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint based criminal history records check;
  8. Have no conviction for a felony or have been discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any branch of the United States armed forces;
  9. Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position;
  10. Submit to and pass a pre-employment screening test for use of illegal drugs OR certify that they have not used any controlled substance illegally within the past twelve months;
  11. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment;
  12. Upon appointment, successfully complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy.

Overview

Summary: Under immediate supervision, performs children's services work of average difficulty in the supervision, observation, and security of youths; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features: This is the entry-working class in the DCS Officer sub-series. An employee in this class is assigned to work in an institutional setting providing youth supervision and may be assigned to work a fixed or rotating schedule. This class differs from DCS Corporal in that an incumbent of the latter performs supervisory duties.

Responsibilities

Resolving Conflicts and Negotiation with Others:

  1. Addresses and resolves youth conflicts immediately before situations escalate.

Performing for or Working Directly with the Public:

  1. Checks visitors for any contraband.
  2. Performs vendor tool checks.
  3. Ensures visitors are authorized on facility.

Coaching and Developing Others:

  1. Explains to youth appropriate behavior expectations.
  2. Addresses and corrects inappropriate youth behaviors.
  3. Ensures youth comply with behavior expectations.
  4. Conducts and facilitates group counseling sessions with youth.
  5. Supervises youth activity groups.

Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings:

  1. Performs searches on youth, staff and areas to prevent and detect any contraband.
  2. Provides constant supervision of institutionalized youth by maintaining security.
  3. Monitors youth's chores such as cleaning dormitories, removing trash, collecting and dispersing laundry to maintain a clean living environment.

Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material:

  1. Inspects laundry items for damages and stains.
  2. Inspects areas for damaged or non-functioning doors, windows, locks, etc.

Operating vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment:

  1. Transports youth off-campus to various appointments (i.e. court, medical, etc.).
  2. Uses mechanical restraints during transporting youth or physical interventions.
  3. Operates washing/drying machines and hand-held radios.

Documenting/Recording Information:

  1. Completes facility incident reports, injury reports, disciplinary reports, chemical bin cards, maintenance requests and tool inventories.
  2. Maintains daily dormitory log books: youth counts, unusual events (i.e. fights, medical emergencies), any person movement, deficiencies, chemical counts, receiving and issuing youth mail.
  3. Maintains and updates youth rosters.
  4. Completes confinements observation documentation.
  5. Documents laundry item counts.
  6. Completes daily youth evaluation forms.

Assisting and Caring for Others:

  1. Uses physical intervention to prevent self-harm to the youth and/or others.
  2. Administers first aid to students when needed.
  3. Supervises individual youth when receiving medications in the dormitory from authorized medical staff.
  4. Oversees youths' personal hygiene.
  5. Issues personal hygiene items to youth as needed.

Performing Administrative Activities:

  1. Attends treatment team meetings.
  2. Attends any other related meetings as assigned.
  3. Attends staff meetings.
  4. Attends youth discipline and grievance committee meetings.

Training and Teaching Other:

  1. Teaches youth how to perform personal hygiene, housekeeping, laundry and cleaning tasks.

Getting Information:

  1. Monitors and documents youth behavior for evaluations and treatment teams.

TN Driver Standards

State of Tennessee positions that may involve driving responsibilities require candidates to meet the following minimum driver qualifications:

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
