If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking a skilled embedded developer to join our multidisciplinary and highly collaborative team in the design, integration, and delivery custom end-to-end RF communications systems built around software defined radios. As a member of our team, you'll architect and implement embedded systems for groundbreaking RF communications for the special operations and intelligence communities. These systems address challenging national security problems and enable planning and decision making in domains as diverse as active threat deterrence, signal intelligence, cyber operations, machine learning, image processing, and applied data analytics. Our systems range from massive RF processing systems to small, low-power systems architected for specialized application. You'll join a multidisciplinary team of engineers who believe in fostering a diverse and collaborative work environment to solve complex problems.

As an Embedded System Developer, you will...

  • Architect and implement complex embedded systems using CPUs, programmable logic, and ADCs/DACs or RF integrated circuits
  • Support the full implementation cycle from conception to fielded deliverable including driver integration, design of Linux images, developing bootloaders, maintaining a BSP, and executing board bring up
  • Support integration, field testing, debugging, and troubleshooting, often under tight time constraints.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or another field relevant to the duties as described above.
  • Have 3+ years of software development experience with proficiency in C/C++, Python, VHDL or Verilog, and synthesis tools (e.g. Xilinx Vivado).
  • Are comfortable working in and developing for Linux including driver integration, kernel development, and imaging to run on custom hardware (e.g. Petalinux, Yocto, etc).
  • Use Gitlab for build automation and CI/CD to automatically test, configure, build and deploy complex software applications.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Demonstrate success with architecting embedded systems.
  • Can implement signal processing algorithms in software and HDL.
  • Are familiar with Google Protocol Buffers and ZeroMQ networking library.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
