Job Description

Summary

The production internship is designed to give students a realistic preview of processes in the manufacturing of valves and hydrants. The intern will be assigned hands-on learning projects relating to manufacturing processes and methods. Samples of projects may include process documentation and standardization, capacity utilization and process improvements, or material inspection and quality control. Theintern must be a flexible and adaptable team-player, as well as havegood communication skills.

The Production Intern must be in the process of obtaining a degree in engineering, applied engineering, business, or related technical field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Proactively promotes The McWane Way principles.
  • Process standardization and documentation:
    • Assists with process sheet analysis and development and training matrices to define the learning process.
    • Collaborates with operators, trainers, and engineers to solidify concise process instructions.
    • Translates processes into training sheets and work instructions.
    • Shadows and assists trainers and operators in testing work instructions.
  • Capacity utilization and process improvements:
    • Performs ergonomic evaluations, time studies, or simulations to aid in optimization of assembly flow and throughput.
    • Takes metrics from actual output and projects potential output with process improvement recommendations.
    • Conducts process/workflow mapping.
    • Analyzes production data and makes process improvement recommendations.
    • Creates and/or maintains electronic continuous improvement library.
  • Material inspection and quality control:
    • Performs repetitive visual material inspections to ensure specifications are met.
    • Uses precision measurement tools, such as micrometers, hardness testers, etc.
    • Works from complex drawings and specifications.
    • Recommends methods for correcting deviations.

The individual MUST BE a self-starter with ability to take limited input and direction and achieve the desired goal. Education and/or Experience

  • Must be actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in engineering, applied engineering, business or related technical field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook required.
  • Must be flexible and adaptable team-player, as well as havegood communication skills.
  • This is a part-time temporary position with a variable schedule that may be worked around school schedules.
  • Must be available a minimum of 12 hours per week and up toa maximum of 29 hours per week.

Language Skills

Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Should be able to speak effectively to customers, management and/or other fellow employees of the organization.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
