About the Job

The Jain Lab (https://cbs.umn.edu/directory/kanishk-jain) is looking for a motivated, organized, and enthusiastic Research Professional 3 to assist in the design and implementation of new and ongoing research projects in the lab aimed at investigating the roles of histone modifying enzymes in biology and disease. This position will also function to assist in managing the day-to-day lab logistics. Assist in mentoring, training, and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.

Essential Functions:
60% Molecular Biology Research:
Assist in the design and implementation of research projects and experimental procedures. Prepare plasmid DNA for protein expression, grow and harvest bacterial cultures, express and purify proteins, and prepare samples for biochemical analysis. Prepare lab stocks and reagents.

20% Lab Management:
Generate and maintain a laboratory inventory of equipment, materials, reagents, and miscellaneous supplies. Order and receive all supplies, reagents, and equipment. Troubleshoot and repair (or coordinate repair) lab equipment/instruments. Update and maintain spreadsheets/databases of reagents.

15% Mentoring/Training & Other Various Tasks: Orient new students to lab procedures and common laboratory skills. Day to day mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students in the lab, as determined by Dr. Jain. Other various duties to support lab operations.

5% Meetings:
Participate in lab group meetings and attend relevant on-campus seminars and discussion groups.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field plus at least four years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and work experience to equal at least eight years. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written formats. Familiarity with standard practices for laboratory safety. Previous experience in a research laboratory. Strong organizational skills and familiarity with basic computer programs such as word processing and spreadsheets. Ability to record results and track samples accurately using standard practices.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with one or more of the following techniques is beneficial but not required: Plasmid DNA design and preparation, Sterile technique, Bacterial cell culture, Mammalian cell culture, Protein expression, purification, and characterization, DNA and protein sequence analysis, Statistical analysis, and/or proficiency in coding.

BMBB:
The department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics is committed to understanding the molecular mechanisms of metabolic diseases and cancer; developing novel strategies in biocatalysis and biotechnology; and advancing knowledge through structural biology and molecular biophysics. We organize ourselves into research divisions with emphases on Chemical and Structural Biology, Metabolic and Systems Biology, Molecular Biology and Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology. We are housed in new buildings with state-of-the-art research and support facilities.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $51,376 - $55,000 Annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment

Position Type: Civil-Service & Non-Faculty Labor Represented Staff
