Job Title: Wheeler Audio Engineer
Department: Wheeler Opera House
Classification: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $30.24/hour - $34.02/hour
Salary Range: $30.24/hour - $45.36/hour

Position Summary: The Audio Engineer is responsible for overseeing all audio-related technical operations at the Wheeler Opera House, a historic theater in Aspen, Colorado. This position plays a key role in ensuring the highest quality audio experiences for performances, events, and programs, including concerts, theatrical productions, film screenings, and dance, consistent with the organization's values and mission statement.
Supervision Exercised and Received: The Audio Engineer works under the direct supervision of the Production Manager and collaborates with a multidisciplinary production team to support a wide range of artistic and cultural activities.

Essential Job Functions:
Audio System Management
*Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the theater's audio systems, including digital mixing consoles, amplifiers, microphones, speakers, in-ear monitors, and other related equipment.
*Program and configure audio deployments for various events, ensuring optimal sound quality and coverage for both live and recorded performances.
*Perform regular inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on audio equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
*Maintain an inventory of audio gear and recommend upgrades or replacements as needed.

Event Support
*Collaborate with the Production Manager to understand and fulfill technical requirements for performances and events.
*Serve as the lead audio technician during events, including sound checks, rehearsals, and live performances.
*Mix live sound for a variety of performances, adapting to the needs of artists, directors, and clients.
*Record and archive performances as required, ensuring compliance with intellectual property and copyright standards.

Collaboration and Communication
*Work closely with lighting and stage technicians to ensure seamless integration of audio within the broader production design.
*Communicate effectively with performers, clients, and external production teams to address technical needs and resolve issues.
*Provide guidance to visiting audio engineers, ensuring they adhere to house policies and safety standards.

Administrative and Training
*Maintain detailed records of equipment usage, maintenance, and repairs.
*Assist the Production Manager with budgeting for audio equipment,supplies, and staffing.
*Train and supervise part-time and volunteer technical staff on proper use of audio equipment and safety protocols.
*Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in audio engineering.

Facility Support
*Assist with the technical setup, operation, and strike of events beyond audio when required, including lighting, video, and staging.
*Participate in load-ins and loadouts, ensuring the safety of equipment and personnel.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: Diploma, Associate's, or bachelor's degree in Audio Engineering, Technical Theater, or a related field preferred.
Experience:
*A minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in live sound engineering, preferably in a theater, music venue, or similar setting.

Skills and Competencies
*Proficiency with industry-standard audio equipment, including digital mixing consoles (e.g., Avid, Yamaha, Digico or equivalent).
*Strong understanding of audio signal flow, acoustics, and system optimization.
*Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
*Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues efficiently.
*Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative mindset.

Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of the start date.
NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
Preferred Candidate: Bachelor's degree in performing arts or business administration related field of study preferred.
NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
Position Type and Work Hours:
*Regular full-time, hours and days will vary with workload.
*Holidays will be required dependent on workload and staffing needs.
*Overtime will occasionally be required dependent on workload and staffing needs.
Work Environment:
This position operates within the Wheeler Opera House, a historic theater with modernized technical systems. The role requires adaptability to varied event schedules, including extended hours during peak seasons.
