DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department embodies the university's tradition of excellence as a world-class leader in computer science and engineering education and research. Ranked in the top 20 nationwide, the department is dedicated to research, education and overall excellence.

CSE has approximately 80+ faculty FTE, 20+ professional researchers, 50+ staff in career/casual titles, 300+ tutors, and 175+ TAs. There are over 1,700 undergraduate students enrolled in 3 majors, with annual enrollments of 25,000+. The department has a graduate education program with over 1,000 students (~350 PhD students and over 800 Master's students).

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under general supervision of the Master's Program Manager, the incumbent is independently responsible for Master's Academic Advising, providing guidance in the administration all matters pertaining to admissions of Master's and Bachelor's/Master's Student Programs. Duties include monitoring and advising academic progress of approximately 800 Master's students, analyzing policy changes impacting CSE programs. The incumbent is also responsible for providing programmatic and academic advising to prospective Master's students (6,000+ applicants) with matters related to admissions into the department's Master's programs (Master's and Integrated Bachelor's/Master's Programs). This process includes: working closely with the Master's Admissions Committee, responding to inquiries related to various graduate programs offered, areas of faculty interest/research, and admission requirements. The incumbent manages the departmental admission database, assists in developing admission review tools, and provides statistical data and analyses as requested.

The Master's Program Advisor participates in the administration of Master's student outreach and enrichment programs, and is involved in all other aspects of business pertaining to Master's Student Affairs, including assisting with the annual Master's Student Orientation.

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

• Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of and experience in higher education. Knowledge of policies and procedures relative to Student Affairs.

• Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to graduate students, including managing curriculum administration, advising students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements, and to implement the department's goals and objectives.

• Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to successfully follow multiple tasks through to completion; must be able to meet established deadlines while working in an environment with frequent interruptions. Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally one's position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner. Ability to speak effectively and with poise before large and/or small groups of people.

• Interpersonal skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively listen, advise and counsel diverse personalities using tact, flexibility, diplomacy, independent and mature judgment.

• Ability to be sensitive to students' needs and concerns; Ability to deal with stressful and unpleasant situations without losing composure. Experience in counseling and conflict resolution.

• Skill in dealing with students in crisis in a professional and concerned manner. Ability to deal with exceptions and skill at devising viable alternatives.

• Ability to interact with and clarify procedures for faculty by means of collecting research, and development and management of new policies as needed.

• Skills and knowledge to supervise, delegate and set priorities. Ability to adjust to shifting priorities and work under short deadline situations while maintaining composure.

• Ability to organize and analyze needs related to work situation and to develop programs, write informational brochures, and make recommendations based on evaluations.

• Skill and knowledge to interpret policies, make decisions independently, work with minimal directions, and negotiate conflicts.

• Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.

• This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
