UIC is seeking a Data Center Operations (DCO) Technician to join our Technology Solutions team. This role will support the DCO team by operating several mission-critical data center spaces at UIC that serve enterprise and research computing needs for Central IT and departmental units across the University of Illinois System. This position will monitor data center activities and infrastructure, and respond to incidents and requests accordingly. In addition to serving as an on-site liaison for service providers, this position will assist with data center asset management, inventory, and server hardware installation. The DCO Technician must possess the flexibility to work off hours to achieve responsibilities, work well in a team environment, and complete individual assignments efficiently.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Monitor data center activities and infrastructure, including; Cooling systems; Power distribution ; Physical security controls; Fire suppression & detection and UPS and generator backup power.
  • Respond to data center incidents and requests accordingly.
  • Serve as an on-site liaison for service providers and partners.
  • Perform data center physical asset management and inventory.
  • Perform server hardware installation, setup, and maintenance.
  • Uphold and help maintain documented processes and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
  2. Minimum 1 year of professional IT experience within System Administration & Operations which includes demonstrated experience in configuration, installation, maintenance, backup / recovery and upgrading multi-user computer systems hardware and software as well as establishing/managing user accounts.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Computer Science or IT background.
  • Previous work in a data center environment.
  • Experience with server hardware installation, physical layer networking, and IT Service Management softwares (e.g. ServiceNow, TeamDynamix).
  • Knowledge of data center infrastructure, fundamental IT and networking concepts.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and independently.
  • Valid Driver's license for use of departmental vehicle to access data centers.
