Position Summary

The Social Services Assistant will facilitate the overall mission of The Salvation Army by providing support to the Director of Social Services in all phases of the delivery of social service aide to the community.

Essential Functions



  • Give support to the Social Service Program Manager with preparing food bags and distributing the appropriate food, clothing, or other assistance as is available.
  • Maintain cleanliness of food pantry and food pantry storage, maintaining LARFB guidelines.
  • Quality assurance of all food and non-food donations.
  • Assist with the inventory of food pantry as it relates to the purchasing/ordering of food and other goods.
  • Maintain up to date food handlers Certificate.
  • Use up-to-date referral system to provide referrals for services not provided by The Salvation Army.
  • Assist with pick up, drop off, loading and unloading donations as requested.
  • Help facilitate the training of all aides and volunteers.
  • Accept donations and provide donation receipts to all donors.
  • Maintain a clean, presentable, and professional working environment.
  • Assist with all seasonal and special project social service activities, functions, and programs.
  • Various other duties as assigned.


Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate a computer and telephone. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications



  • The capacity to work effectively with, and relate to, a diverse population of individuals from all backgrounds in society.
  • Ability to solve problems, deal with crisis situations, and think outside the box.
  • Excellent customer service and relationship-building skills are essential.
  • Recent successful clerical experience.
  • Proficiency in staying within budgets while providing high quality service is necessary.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language, and have an open, welcoming, and helpful presence and attitude with all people.
  • Previous successful experience organizing, training, and working with volunteers.
  • Must be familiar with, understand, and be willing to comply with and communicate the mission and goals of The Salvation Army.
  • Must be punctual, organized, reliable, conscientious, and trustworthy.
  • Must be comfortable contacting and coordinating work with vendors, other organizations, community leaders and donors.
  • Excellent organizational skills including multitasking and time management.
  • Willingness to submit to, and pass extensive criminal background, drug and department of motor vehicles checks.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and good driving record.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, as well as Citrix and the Salvation Army Application Portal.
  • Must be capable of handling confidential material, demonstrate good judgment and act and dress in a professional manner.
  • Must possess a broad-spectrum skill set including social service functions knowledge, volunteer training, delegation, and supervision, as well as administrative and clerical tasks.
  • Must remain calm, collected, and respectful in stressful situations.
  • Must possess a strong desire and willingness to create links between the social service office and the worshipping congregation of the Pasadena Tabernacle Corps.
  • Ability to quickly grasp and analyze circumstances resulting in effective decision-making, staying on-task and within policy guidelines.
  • Must be creative and able to work with minimal supervision, cope with change, be prepared to encounter a variety of assignments and timelines and maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials and information.
