Position Summary:

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood collection activities for the purpose of health assessment in the Pathology department at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center; Miller Children's and Women's Hospital. The Phlebotomist also performs all activities, pre-analytic functions, and data management under the direction of a California Licensed Supervisor as defined in Chapter 3 of State of California Business and Professions Code. Provides customer service communication via phone and face to face. Ensures that equipment and safety devices are used appropriately following set guidelines.Performs venipuncture, heel stick and finger stick specimen collection activities from pediatrics, neonatal, and adult population following appropriate procedure and protocol for health assessment.

Essential Function and Responsibilities of the Job

Communicate effectively and courteously. Address customers using eye contact in a polite, expedient, and helpful tone of voice. Continually update knowledge to provide current and accurate information to those requesting assistance.

Address and calm potentially tense situations. Make informed and educated decisions with little notice and minimal supervisor involvement.

Act in a responsible and trustworthy manner at all times. Take responsibility when supervision is not available.

Identify chain of command and utilize resources effectively by researching and resolving problems, situations and challenges routinely encountered during the work shift.

Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience

Education/License/Certification

High School graduate or equivalent preferred

Current certification as a Phlebotomist Technician by the State of California

2+ years of previous experience performing venipuncture on hospital based patient populations is preferred.

Knowledge of specimen collection techniques, equipment and specimen handling is required
