2025 Summer Intern, MS/PhD, Perception - Machine Learning/Computer Vision

Waymo
United States, California, Mountain View
1600 Amphitheatre Parkway (Show on map)
Jan 14, 2025

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Waymo interns partner with leaders in the industry on projects that create impact to the company. We believe learning is a two-way street: applying your knowledge while providing you with opportunities to expand your skill-set. Interns are an important part of our culture and our recruiting pipeline. Join us at Waymo for a fun and rewarding internship!

You will:

  • Design and develop Deep Learning Models as well as Vision Language Models (VLMs/LLMs) for autonomous driving. Potential projects include:
  • Leveraging VLM/LLM's world knowledge and reasoning capabilities for driving related applications
  • Design and implementation of multi-modality (camera/radar/lidar) and multi-task perception models focusing on 3D object (open vocabulary) detection and tracking, segmentation, semantics understanding, video understanding, audio localization, scene understanding, traffic control, or trajectory prediction, etc.
  • Pre-training and self-supervised learning techniques; few-shot learning techniques
  • Gain experience on large scale machine learning systems and on different phases of model development: data mining, labeling, training and evaluation, with vast and high fidelity data from Waymo driving logs.

You have:

  • Pursuing a Masters or PhD program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or related technical fields
  • Experience with Deep Learning, VLM/LLMs, and/or Computer Vision
  • Experience with Python and deep learning frameworks such as JAX, Tensorflow, Pytorch

We prefer:

  • Strong track record of high quality ML / CV research. Publications at top-tier conferences like CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICLR, ICML, ICRA, IROS, RSS, NeurIPS.
  • Experience with training large VLM/LLMs with distributed training
  • Experience in task domains such as object detection, segmentation, multiple-object tracking, occupancy detection, semantics understanding, or trajectory prediction.

Note: This will be a hybrid onsite internship position. We will accept resumes on a rolling basis until the role is filled. To be in consideration for multiple roles, you will need to apply to each one individually - please apply to the top 3 roles you are interested in.
