SELF is looking for an experienced, collaborative, deeply invested leader to run editorial coverage across digital platforms. Reporting directly to the Editor-in-Chief, you will oversee a small team of outstanding journalists to produce timely news coverage, in-depth feature reporting, service journalism, and thought-provoking tentpoles in all of SELF's primary beats.

More specifically, you will work with EIC to define and execute editorial strategy, including programming the daily editorial calendar and setting overall content goals. You will be responsible for meeting brand KPIs like time spent, visitors, and audience growth and need to operationalize the editorial team accordingly. Not only will you lead strategic projects and initiatives on SELF, but you'll also partner with senior leaders across the company on major brand initiatives including sponsored content projects, video series, narrative longform packages, social media, commerce content, events, advertising and branded content, and more. Management experience is essential to success in this role.

The ideal candidate has a robust background writing about complex, nuanced health and wellness topics. You'll have a strong scientific literacy and a deep understanding of what evidence and sourcing is necessary to accurately and fairly write about various health topics. You can both assign, edit, and publish stories on tight timelines and also manage longer term projects and campaigns.

Most importantly, you are curious and looking to upend the way the world talks about wellness. You're ready to wade into controversial topics like GLP-1 drugs and longevity with a strong respect for truth and a heavy dose of skepticism. You are passionate about differentiating SELF's voice in the crowded world of health journalism.

The Executive Editor will report to the Editor in Chief and candidates should be based in New York City or willing to relocate.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with EIC to set SELF's content strategy across verticals, including health, wellness, beauty, relationships, fitness, and food

  • Help define and hone the SELF brand voice

  • Maintain relationships and recruit a diverse pool of freelance writers and columnists

  • Assign and edit cover stories and other feature articles, as well as top edit daily editorial content as necessary

  • Use data and analytics to optimize performance and maintain consistent growth, while meeting company KPIs for traffic and time spent

  • Hire and manage section leads - provide effective feedback, coaching, and mentorship with the goal of growing their pitching, writing, and editing skills

  • Partner with other key departments, including photo, video, commerce, social, PR, audience development, to ensure all content goals are met

  • Implement clear processes and communication channels for the team - delegate work effectively, provide clear direction, and help team members resolve challenges

  • Consult on sponsored and branded content strategy in collaboration with EIC and Managing Editor to support SELF's business development

  • Represent SELF internally and externally at events and as an industry expert

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of experience editing accurate, inclusive, and high-impact journalism in a fast-paced digital setting

  • Experience overseeing content from brainstorm to publication - approving ideas, sourcing art, scheduling posts, promotion on newsletters and social, etc.

  • High scientific literacy and deep understanding of health reporting and sourcing best practices

  • Impeccable editing skills and editorial judgment on both news and long-form reporting, and experience handling legally sensitive stories

  • Knowledge of best practices when it comes to content that covers mental health; sex, sexuality, and gender; love, relationships, and friendships; substance use; and disability

  • Ability to pitch story ideas that are timely, shareable, thought-provoking, and as enticing as they are editorially sound

  • Exceptional organizational skills, with an ability to efficiently juggle many responsibilities and tasks

  • Prior people management experience and a demonstrated excitement for mentoring and nurturing junior talent

The expected base salary range for this position is from $160,000-$180,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
