Job Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Police Sergeant is to serve as the departments first line of supervision. This position is under the general supervision of a Police Lieutenant, Police Captain, or Director, and is responsible for the safety and security, on all University properties, of all staff, students and the general public.

Police Sergeants are assigned to an operational area of the Department. Operational areas may include patrol and security services, personnel and human resources, special events, investigations, training, emergency management, access control and infrastructure security. Operational areas may change depending on changes in organization structure and/or operational focus. Each Police Sergeant is expected to be able to learn whichever operational area assigned as well as how that area interacts and impacts other operational areas.

This Police Sergeant position has the responsibility for providing supervisory reports regarding services; ensuring compliance with mandates; leading, managing and supervising any personnel assigned; establishing goals; creating and communicating written directives and guidelines; creating and engaging and inclusive work environment; responding to and managing incidents, events and emergencies; providing leadership department-wide; planning and preparation for incidents, events and emergencies; building relationships with staff, key partners, other entities and the community.


Responsibilities:
Supervises and/or trains line officers, and administers programs for police officers and associated staff to ensure safety and security on all institutional properties. Enforces laws, investigates complaints and incidents, maintains order, identifies criminal activity, and apprehends and arrest offenders.

  • 20% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 20% Develops and communicates directives to staff and monitors compliance with rules and regulations
  • 20% Schedules logistics and resources to protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order; and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
  • 10% Provides leadership, mentoring and coaching to unit staff
  • 10% Engages in problem solving, threat assessment/mitigation and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
  • 20% Required to work special events and assignments as identified by the Division.

Qualifications:

Required:

Minimum of 5 years of full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer
OR
Combination of a minimum of 3 years of full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer AND a minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.

Meet all UW Risk Management criteria to operate university vehicles (no more than two moving violations, operating after revocation or suspension, or operating without a valid driver's license within the two years and/or have more than six demerit points assessed on his or her driver's license and have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License upon appointment).

Must not have any unpardoned felony convictions, any domestic violence convictions, any other criminal convictions within the past five years, convictions for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in the past five years.

Applicants not meeting these criteria will not be considered.

Law Enforcement Academy Certification
Current Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification or have been Wisconsin Law Enforcement certified within the past two years and eligible for immediate recertification as a Law Enforcement Officer in Wisconsin.

Preferred
CPR - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Required
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards
Persons in this position must obtain or possess a valid Wisconsin Driver's License upon hire.


Work Schedule:

This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. The appointed area will have a pre-determined rotating schedule in which may be assigned to first, second, or third shift. The schedule may include working weekends and Holidays. The final schedule determined will meet the needs of the Department. Routinely persons in this position will be required to work beyond or outside hours assigned and may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned.

Night & Weekend Differential:
UWPD offers a $2.50/hr night differential for all hours worked between 6:00pm - 6:00am and a $2.00/hr weekend differential for all hours worked between 12:001am - 12:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. These differentials are layered, so when working a weekend night, you will receive both.

All employees are eligible to apply for tuition reimbursement.

Qualifications and experience are factors considered for pay above the minimum wage posted within the salary grade 24 (salary details: https://hr.wisc.edu/pay/salary-structure/).

Hiring Bonus up to $13,000 to all Police Officer hires. Hiring bonus based upon years of law enforcement experience and percentage of starting salary (minimum of $5,000 for all police officer hires). Payments are paid in 2 installments (1st after 30 days of employment and 2nd after completion of training)
