Position Summary:

Serves as a member of the open-heart surgical team that operates the heart-lung machine in order to maintain homeostasis, anticoagulation, and acid base balance during the operative procedure. Works under the direction of the cardiac surgeon, anesthesiologist or appropriate physician while in surgery. Receives day-to-day supervision and scheduled assignments from the Director of Perfusion and Autotransfusion.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Operates and maintains all perfusion equipment, heart-lung machine, autotransfusion equipment, intra-aortic balloon pumps, ventricular assist devices, liver transplant systems, rapid transfusion devices, and extra corporeal life support devices.
  • Ensures adequate myocardial protection in regards to safe and effective delivery while keeping the surgeon informed of the current status of time, Temperature, pressures, and volume of delivery.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and ensures all appropriate safety precautions are taken to safeguard the patient.
  • Understands, performs and maintains proper anticoagulation for extra-corporeal procedures as well as reversal of anticoagulation.
  • Understands, maintains and monitors all aspects of adequate perfusion to patients under their care, including, but not limited to blood gases, electrolyte levels, hematocrits, urine output, blood pressure, cerebral perfusion and anesthesia.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited program of Perfusion Education, B.S or M.S.
  • Must also be certified or board eligible for Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion,
  • Licensure by MA Board of Registration of Perfusionists.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Must keep current on perfusion knowledge maintaining high standards of competence.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work and act quickly under stressful situations is required.
  • Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
