Job Summary

Reporting to the VP / Chief Nurse Officer and VP of Surgical Services (for 3 Birth Center OR's), the Patient Care Director of of the Birth Center has 24-hour responsibility for the management of nursing personnel, other personnel, and patient care in the assigned departments (current but not limited to: OBED, Antepartum, L&D, Postpartum, Birth Center OR's, Newborn Nursery, and Newborn Hearing Screeners). Collaborates with the Director of the OR for Mission Bay to provide seamless patient care. Promotes environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. Accountable for the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of patient care. Consults and collaborates with other health care professionals to coordinate the management of patient care. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, students, and others. Involved in ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and/or provision of patient care delivery. Contributes to the nursing services and the clinical enterprise through support of philosophy, objectives, and educational efforts. Provides administrative leadership and direction to all assigned departments including planning, directing, financial performance, performance improvement, human resource management, evaluation of care, and service initiatives. Promotes environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. Accountable for the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of patient care. Consults and collaborates with other health care professionals to coordinate the management of patient care. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, students, and others.

Participates with leadership to develop short- and long-term strategies related to patient care and growth. Fosters leadership and change management skills in subordinate leadership to promote an agile and flexible workforce. Represents nursing on cross-functional committees; has an external presence in community and professional organizations and societies. Oversees large, multiple departments. Ensures that quality nursing care is provided and in alignment with internal policy and external regulations for the medical center and/or health system.

Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product of service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience. As a customer-focused team member, he/she must be accessible, flexible, knowledgeable, and responsive. Supports UCSF's overall mission to provide high quality patient care, teaching and research.

The Patient Care Director works closely with the inter-professional team and may represent the Medical Center for specific projects or initiatives at local hospitals or community agencies.

Financial Management:
Participates in financial management to assure revenue, expenses, contribution margin, and FTEs meet or are favorable to budget. Works with their direct report to prepare and submit budgets completely and timely, knows and understands the details of the budget reports, forecasts and accurately projects expenses; takes corrective action to address negative variances. Identifies and proposes capital budget items appropriately; prepares adequate capital equipment proposal and justification. Link budget decision and resource allocation to strategic initiatives.

Strategic Performance Improvement:
Maintains high quality and service-oriented reputation for the departments and health system. Participates in the ongoing development of the strategic initiatives and outcomes by integrating across the health system. Leads the implementation of strategic plans, annual goals, work plans, policies and budget service that is consistent with business plans of UCSF Health. Develop data metrics to ensure operational/cross functional needs are met across the health system. Resolve system issues within and across services.

Regulatory Accreditation Standards:
Ensures that compliance and accreditation standards are met in all areas of responsibility. Develops and maintains departmental policy and procedures, and complies with all applicable regulatory standards.

Leadership:
Foster a work environment that supports teamwork, open communication and engagement across the health system. Establish communication standards of performance, provides timely feedback and assures accountability to establish expectations. Stays up to date on new developments in the field and incorporates such in the department's scope of service. Reports directly to the CNO and participates in all long-term and short-term strategic planning for the hospital(s). Serves on various system committees and projects to share in decision-making concerning the delivery of care and operations of the hospital. Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors, adheres to all UCSF policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service. Promotes individual professional growth development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals, which contributes to the success of the organization. Other duties as assigned.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $266,324 - $290,984 (Annual Rate).

The newest campus, Mission Bay, is home to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco, UCSF Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital, UCSF Bakar Cancer Hospital and the UCSF Bakar Precision Cancer Medicine Building, in addition to numerous outpatient services for children and adults.

The UCSF Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital was designed to deliver the same cutting-edge care in a setting that supports the whole woman. Amenities in Birth Center range from bathtubs built specifically for laboring people, to a dedicated infant care area in every room, so parent and baby can stay together during minor tests and procedures.

The Birth Center is located on the 3rd floor of the Betty Irene Women's Hospital and has 9 bed Triage/OB Emergency Department (OB ED), 9 Labor beds, 12 Antepartum beds, 3 ORs, 2 beds in Triage are utilized for PACU, 24 Postpartum beds and 6 Newborn Nursery beds. There are ~200 FTE's, 1 Unit Director, and 4 Managers who manage this site. The Birth Center falls under both Adult Services and see's acute and tertiary care, many times as the only option in the San Francisco bay area, to critical patients in need due to the Maternal Fetal Medicine and Geneticist expertise.

Required Qualifications


  • At least five (5) years of increasingly nursing management and leadership experience in a large academic, complex and highly-matrixed health care organization
  • A minimum of (5) years leadership experience managing women's health services (OB, L&D or Maternal Fetal units)
  • Experience in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Anti-Racism
  • Advanced knowledge of hospital operations in a multi-hospital setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the multidisciplinary team.
  • Advanced communications and interpersonal skills to promote an effective model of shared governance among multiple disciplines. Ability to motivate and engage all levels of staff regarding patient care programs, strategies, and organizational mission and values.
  • Advanced leadership, fiscal and operations management skills. Ability to develop nurse leaders in their adoption and promotion of a shared governance model of collaboration
  • Ability to develop a systems strategic plan and implement that vision across a large, complex organization.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the American Nurses Credential Center (ANCC) Magnet journey and process
  • Advanced leadership, fiscal and operations management skills. Ability to develop nurse leaders in their adoption and promotion of a shared governance model of collaboration.
  • Advanced conceptual clinical base with expertise in professional practice models, evidence based practice, systems thinking and quality improvement.
  • In-depth knowledge of a broad scope of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
  • BSN; CA RN License required.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Masters Degree in Nursing
  • Oversight of units with 200 FTE or more
  • Prior experience working in a union environment
  • Experience with LEAN methodologies and/or knowledge and support of LEAN Management principles.
  • Ability to engage in professional nursing associations, academic nursing partnerships , and nursing community to represent UCSF Nursing Services
  • Previous nursing director level experience in a multi-hospital system with oversight of multiple nursing units/clinical areas.

License/Certification

CA RN License required.
