Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Medical Services Assistant for the
OBGYN Clinic at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The Medical Services Assistant performs administrative and clinical tasks as assigned to support effective and efficient office operations. As directed by the physician, administers intramuscular and subcutaneous injections in limited circumstances which may be delegated under the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners regulations. Performs venipuncture.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Answers the telephone with a pleasant demeanor, always identifying self, and location.
- Advises patients regarding preparation of necessary forms; counsels patients regarding paperwork requirements.
- Competently performs the following financial functions based on assignment: Scheduling, pre-registration, recording patient arrival, administering financial and HIPAA paperwork, obtaining necessary signatures, receiving referral and pre-certification numbers; performs online insurance verification to assist patient with their payment options.
- Collects and secures copays, and post in the financial system; administers receipts and prepares necessary paperwork for later reconciliation of the batch transactions.
- After demonstrating competency, performs and documents patient care-related tasks as assigned by the registered nurse, license practical nurse, and/or physician. These may include but are not limited to: pre-visit chart review and retrieval of missing documents; preparing exam room for the office visit; preparing the patient for the exam; obtaining and documenting reason for the visit, vital signs, medication reconciliation and allergy review, smoking and immunization histories; performing and documenting Point of Care Testing including running a urinalysis, blood glucose finger stick, fecal occult blood and urine pregnancy test; maintaining test supplies, temperature of room, refrigerator and freezer where supplies are kept, running quality controls, and maintaining logs for Point of Care Testing, performing vision and hearing screening; performing EKGs; session set-up and close; office procedure set up; performing high-level disinfection or autoclave of surgical procedure equipment; maintaining clinical/office Equipment/supply inventory; maintaining/cleaning clinical/office equipment and exam rooms as required.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Meets the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners definition of a "certified medical assistant" as outlined in NJAC 13:35-6.4(a) 2.
- Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
- At least one (1) year of venipuncture experience.
- At least one (1) year of relevant experience.

- Must have demonstrated competency in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.

- Experience with Electronic Medical Record system is preferred; GE Centricity System preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
- Physical Demands: Position requires standing, walking, sitting, use of the hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms over 1/3 of the time, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl under 1/3 of the time. Position requires lifting 1/3 of the time up to 10 pounds, and under 1/3 of the time up to 25 pounds.
- Work Environment: Moderate noise environment with some exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to blood borne pathogens requiring the use of personal protective equipment; some potential exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to hazardous waste.
