Lead Genetics Counselor

Summary:

The in-patient Lead Genetic Counselor reports to the Genetic Counselor supervisor and Director of Genetics. Under the general supervision and in accordance with established policies and procedures coordinates daily activities of all in-patient consultations for Brown University Health and Woman and Infants Hospital. Assists in the development of their schedules and work assignments to provide for efficient practice operations. Ensures adherence to established standards of safety and quality by Brown University Health. Provides guidance to support personnel in collaboration with the Director Program Manager and providers. Routinely performs the duties of genetic counselors.

Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Brown University Health Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

Responsibilities:

Provides technical and professional leadership in the planning and execution of day-to-day activities of the in-patient genetic consultation and newborn screening; Identify and demonstrate methods and techniques for achieving and tracking project/program objectives within the area of expertise utilizing departmental and national benchmark metrics.

Develops operating goals and objectives for the unit; implements and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations in accordance with departmental metrics. Identifies and delegates genetic counselor participation presentation and outreach activities for specific programs and/or projects as appropriate including multidisciplinary conferences.

Coordinates and participates with other genetic counselors in the review of current literature and helps to develop division protocols and guidelines and update smart phrases in EPIC. Work closely with Rhode Island Department of Health for abnormal newborn screening cases.

Participates in assuring excellent educational experience for Warren Alpert/Brown University Health trainees including medical students residents and interns in cancer genetic clinics.

As a genetic counselor obtains and records medical and family histories records physical examinations reviews medical records develops counseling plans and follow-up plans.

Coordinates and assigns representative to orchestrate genetic counseling internships with local genetic counseling programs training related to cancer genetics

Maintains and coordinates in-patient genetic counselor schedules coverage according institutional policy and standard practice.

Delegates the organization of clinical conferences meetings to genetic counselors with the goal of increasing provider education and improving coordination of care.

Leads regularly scheduled Genetic Counselor group meeting to assist in identifying issues/concerns and address them in collaboration with clinic staff.

Advocates for the role and growth of genetic counselors within the Department of Genetics and within Brown University Health.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Master in Genetic Counseling. Board Certification by American Board of Genetic Counseling

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of five years* experience as a genetic counselor in a clinical setting. Must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and effective prioritization and organizational skills. Experience should demonstrate effective organizational leadership and communications skills.
