Cardiothoracic Vascular Transplant Unit
Job Summary The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) receives daily assignments and functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse to carry out direct patient care responsibilities.
All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and customer service. Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, other staff, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to age-specific needs and cultural differences and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $30.51 - $38.15 (Hourly Rate). Department Description The Cardiovascular / Thoracic / Transplant Unit is a 45 bed adult inpatient unit. It is primarily a telemetry / step-down unit that also provides continuous pulse oximetry.
The unit serves the cardiology, cardiothoracic and vascular patient population. Patients admitted to this unit are usually admitted under the Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery (including the Heart & Lung Transplant) and Thoracic Surgery Services.
A wide range of medical disorders are represented including congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, myocardial infarction, and arrhythmias.
The staff on this unit provides an individualized approach to patient care, emphasizing patient and family education regarding lifestyle changes, diet modifications, and medications.
This is a fast-paced unit involving multiple diagnostic tests and procedures, in addition to a moderately high number of discharges and admissions per day. Because of this, teamwork is crucial to daily operations, and is greatly promoted amongst the staff and other members of the health care team.
Among the nurses and physicians, other members of the patient care team include professionals in the areas of social work, pharmacy, dietary, physical therapy (PT), respiratory therapy (RT), speech therapy, occupational therapy, and pastoral care.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to work effectively within a team
- Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description
- Willingness to be taught/learn new skills
- Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction)
- Ability to organize and effectively set priorities
- Ability to carry out duties of first responder in emergency situations
- Successful completion of Medical Center Patient Care Assistant training
- Basic computer skills
- The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to the responsibilities of the job
