Purpose

The Lighting Supervisor of Texas Performing Arts (TPA) is responsible for the theatrical lighting and electrical aspects of all of TPA's events and facilities. As part of TPA's production team and reporting to the Director of Production, the Lighting Supervisor determines the efficient and safe use of lighting equipment, systems, personnel, and processes to ensure production excellence across all of TPA's activities. The position enables artists to fully realize their visions, creates exceptional experiences for audiences, and prioritizes the health and safety of people and spaces.

Responsibilities
  • Planning and Management: Effectively and diplomatically coordinate with visiting productions, event producers, staff, and other stakeholders. In concert with other production department team members, create the highest level of production quality for all Texas Performing Arts events. Ensure that theatrical lighting, power, and atmospheric effects systems conform to required specifications. Use departmental databases and other systems to effectively share planning, cost, and schedule information. Create and maintain clear and accurate schedules, paperwork, and plans for lighting and electrical aspects of productions. Coordinate with vendors on the purchase or rental of equipment as necessary. Obtain quotes and participate in bidding processes. Create, track, and reconcile lighting department and event budgets. Anticipate and proactively correct potential production conflicts and problems. Develop and maintain strong relationships with production stakeholders and peers across the university, in the region, and nationally. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of historical, current, and emerging industry practices.

  • Event Production: Supervise and participate in load-ins, set-ups, performances, strikes, and load-outs. Function as a lighting designer, department head, technician, programmer, or operator as assigned. Oversee architectural or environmental lighting effects beyond the stage when required. Set up and operate lighting/electrical equipment in ancillary spaces when required. Demonstrate a backstage work ethic of proficiency, safety, excellence, and creative problem-solving.

  • Facilities and Equipment: Maintain theatrical lighting and electrical equipment and systems throughout the facility at peak operating levels. Regularly inspect and advise on system status as well as repair or maintenance needs. Research and make recommendations for equipment and system replacement and improvement. Participate in managing and maintaining house and lobby lighting systems. Evaluate and adopt new systems and technology throughout TPA's operations. Maintain, track, and document changes to the house lighting equipment inventory and system information.

  • Management and Training: Manage the Assistant Lighting Supervisor position. These managerial duties include oversight of the position's work portfolio, performance appraisal, and fostering a collaborative and positive work environment. Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, schedule, and supervise professional staff, labor vendor employees, contractors, students, and volunteer lighting and electrical personnel as necessary or as assigned. Develop learning opportunities for UT students. Maintain and directly contribute to a production culture of mentorship, experiential learning, and professional experience for students at UT and in the greater Austin area. Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures regarding student employees.

  • Perform other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with at least five (5) years of experience managing lighting, electrical, electronic, and electromechanical instruments, control, and distribution systems.

  • Demonstrated experience with a wide range of types of live performance.

  • Demonstrated experience leading the departmental advance process for production lighting aspects including scheduling, budgeting, equipment substitution, and staffing.

  • Demonstrated experience with standard theatrical work rules and general conditions for professional stage crews.

  • Demonstrated managerial skill leading and motivating crew of various levels of experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of lighting equipment, systems, protocols, and best practices to include the following:ETC Control Systems, Paradigm House, Work, and Lobby Lighting Systems, DMX systems, ETCNET networking distribution, ETC Sensor Dimmers, Conventional lighting fixtures of all manufacture and type, Moving lights of all manufacture and types, LED lights, Cue lighting systems, Counterweight theatrical rigging systems; truss and motor rigging systems o Computer skills: MS Office, LightWright, Vectorworks, AutoCAD, Basic repair: cables, connectors, basic benchwork and troubleshooting

  • Ability to design and operate lighting consoles for live events having multiple cues.

  • Ability to "call" follow spot operations as necessary.

  • Demonstrated managerial skill leading and motivating crew of various levels of experience.

  • Demonstrated accomplishment maintaining current knowledge of lighting production practices and systems.

  • Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds.

  • Effective Communications: Demonstrated understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

  • Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Demonstrated understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail; ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.

  • Service Excellence: Demonstrated knowledge of customer service concepts and techniques; ability to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations and provide excellent service in a direct or indirect manner.

  • Problem Solving: Demonstrated knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to dynamic situations.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • ETCP certification (Entertainment Electrician)

  • OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30 training.

  • More than the minimum required level of experience.

  • Three or more years of experience working in a supervisory capacity.

  • Fluency in a language other than English.

  • Demonstrated lighting experience in an arts presenting organization; arts producing organization; university-based organization; or multi-venue performing arts organization.

  • Demonstrated experience of lighting techniques for the camera, including film, TV, and internet protocol events.

  • Demonstrated accomplishment in creating and implementing theatrical lighting designs of high artistic quality.

  • Demonstrated lighting experience with international artists and productions.

  • Demonstrated lighting experience in an educational setting; experience in teaching, mentorship, or training roles; experience mentoring student employees.

  • Demonstrated accomplishment creating growth opportunities for fulltime team members; experience creating professional development opportunities for part-time and on-call production crew members.

  • Demonstrated fluency in the use of lighting technology and commitment to adopting new technology; current, demonstrated fluency in all stage production disciplines.

  • Interest in and strong commitment to the mission and programs of Texas Performing Arts.

  • Familiarity with Texas Performing Arts venues.

  • Familiarity with UT Austin policies and procedures.

  • Relevant professional education or credentials.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$75,000 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

Evening, weekend, and holiday work, including "on-call" times, are required in connection with performances and events. Working shifts may include extended daily hours in connection with performances and events. Work will exceed 40 hours per week at peak times. A compensatory time program is provided.
