Overview Buildings & General Service at the State of Vermont has an exciting and unique opportunity with room for growth as a BGS Institutional Mechanic within the Operations & Management Division. This position will be responsible for the daily maintenance at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility (MVRCF) in Rutland. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performing construction and alteration work to include maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, buildings, and utilities. Participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical, plumbing, sewer and water management systems, HVAC, carpentry, masonry, fire alarm, sprinkler, security systems, replacement of circuit boards and building automation system programming and the repair of security grade electronic locks. May oversee contractors or others engaged in maintenance or alteration work. A valid driver's license and multiple background checks are required for this position. Environmental Factors Duties are performed at institutional facilities that operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Contact with inmates can be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require possession of a valid driver's license. Emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours can be expected. Some potential for physical injury may be present. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a trade program or technical school in electrical, HVAC or plumbing, or buildings related field. OR Three (3) or more years of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance. Preferred Qualifications State licensure at or above the journeyman level in any trade area. One (1) or more years of experience as a team lead or overseeing maintenance projects. Special Requirements IMM Candidates must be fingerprinted and pass a background investigation applicable to the position. Stand-by coverage is required for long holiday weekends and Mechanics can expect after-hours call-ins.
