Job Summary
The Student Extern works under the direction of the department/unit leader. The Student Extern is part of an educational program that has partnered with Corewell Health. The Student Extern performs the essential duties within their type of position as outlined below.
Essential Functions
- Patient Care Support Roles duties may include:
Providing care to the patient according to the plan of care, specific unit routines and hospital policy under the Direction of the Registered Nurse. This may include taking vitals, ambulation, or bathing. Documentation of care provided in the electronic medical record. Safe transport of patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatch services and appropriate documentation of services. Performs general receptionist and clerical duties to facilitate efficient functioning of the unit/department. May assist with cleaning or stocking patient rooms. Maintains current knowledge/certification, including BLS. Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job-related hazards. Follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter and intra departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objective. - Non-Patient Care Roles duties may include:
Central Sterile Processing: Preparing case sets for surgeries, unloading the washer line, building case carts, and assisting Technicians Environmental Services: Cleaning non-patient facing areas of the facility that may including hallways, stairways, elevators, and public spaces. Other cleaning projects as assigned. Guest Relations: Greeting visitors, vendors and/or team members promptly and courteously upon arrival. Asks questions to determine the individual's needs, confirms appointments, answers inquiries factually, and directors or escorts the individual to the proper person or area. Lab: Receive laboratory specimens from the pneumatic tub system, delivers laboratory specimens to testing areas, answers phones, and navigates the Epic system to solve problems. Pharmacy: Under the direction and supervision of a Pharmacist, performance a variety of functions related to receiving, stocking, and delivery of medications within an acute care or non-acute care pharmacy. Performs pharmacy functions that do not require a license to support the operations of the department. Materials Management: Provides excellent customer service while stocking floors/units with proper supplies and assisting members of the materials management department with day-to-day functions of the department. - Food Service Related Roles duties may include:
Responsible for production of a wide variety of intricate beverage recipes from a complex combination of ingredients, according to standardized recipes. Work in a fast-paced, high volume work environment. Use of specialized and/or commercial kitchen equipment. Maintain safety and sanitation standards of the work area. Provide patient meal service including accurate portioning and presentation of menu items, set up of tray assembly station, and tray assembly. Transport tray carts and deliver trays to patients. Collect soiled trays and return to kitchen. Stock, distribute and/or collect patient menus. Perform call center duties including ability to answer multiple line phone, input patient selections into computer while ensuring compliance to dietary restrictions and attention to special needs. Responsible for the production of simple standardized recipes and preparing raw and dry ingredients to be used by the cooking staff. Knowledge and application of safe food handling practices. Ensure high quality food products by monitoring ingredients and finished product to meet established quality standards. Attention to special requirements for modified and restricted diets. Maintain safety and sanitation standards of the work area. Communicate effectively. Create an excellent experience for the customer.
Qualifications
- Must be presently enrolled in school or a co-op to work program Required
- Prior experience in patient care Preferred
- Current culinary student with Kent County Technical Center (Preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire or Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross Upon Hire required
