Essential Job Duties
We are excited to welcome a skilled and motivated Carpenter to our Trade Shops team! This role involves a variety of hands-on responsibilities, including installing and finishing drywall, ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetry, and countertops to support campus renovation and maintenance efforts. Our ideal candidate is experienced in renovation practices, proficient with a range of tools and techniques, and knowledgeable in areas such as materials, quality control, and safety protocols. The role requires the ability to read blueprints and demonstrate proficiency in at least one additional building or mechanical trade, along with a working knowledge of multiple trades.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with drywall installation, ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetry, and countertop installations.
  • Work on metal or wood stud wall systems.
  • Perform trim work, hang doors, drill and set door hardware, and install windows.
  • Remove walls, install partitions, and alter rooms or add to existing structures using hand and power tools.
  • Use machines, tools, instruments, equipment, and materials associated with various carpentry tasks.
  • Perform accurate measurements and finishes for carpentry work.
  • Regularly assess safety conditions, identify potential hazards, and communicate them to supervisors.

  • Implement accident prevention and corrective measures in work-related areas.
  • Communicate with customers to improve service delivery based on their feedback, relaying information to the Supervisor.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Assists other trades as required.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Communicates effectively with supervisors and the general public, understanding and following verbal and written instructions and other communications related to work assignments and other matters.
  • Working knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the carpentry trade.
  • The primary functions of the position require the ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a university performing building renovations. This includes installing and finishing drywall, ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetwork and countertop installations.
  • Knows and functions in at least one other trade and possesses general knowledge of others.

  • NC driver's license or able to obtain it within 60 days of hire and it must be maintained.
