Summary:
Reports to the Clinic Manager and under the general direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse Dialysis provides direct and indirect and technical duties in the Dialysis Center. Under supervision assists in a variety of patient care duties including collecting and testing specimens taking and recording vital signs initiation of intradialytic monitoring and termination of hemodialysis treatments. Performs daily testing of water purification system. Assists in the daily opening and closing of the Dialysis Center.

Responsibilities:

Assists the professional staff with delivering the dialysis procedures. Comforts and assures privacy for patients. Provides instruction from standard printed clinical materials. May perform cannulation of fistula needles to initiate dialysis treatments. Assists with patient lifting and positioning as necessary.

Reviews patient appointment schedules to anticipate needs for records materials supplies and equipment. Ensures electronic medical records are available before patient arrival. Reviews records to ensure completeness. Follows up directly or through others to obtain missing documents incomplete test results and the like in order that the patient record is complete and documentation is clear for professional staff review.

Prepares and sets up patient treatment stations before patient arrival with necessary equipment instruments and supplies. Ensures area is maintained in neat clean and organized manner before and following patient visits. May clean treatment station including but not limited to patient chair/bed hemodialysis equipment and related space as appropriate. Prepares instruments as appropriate for cleaning and sterilization.

Receives and greets patients and/or families explains procedures to be performed as appropriate and escorts patient to examination area. Communicates with patients families nursing staff and other clinical staff to promote optimal patient care. Acts as chaperone for patient. Promotes and maintains an environment conducive to the patients* physical and psychological comfort and safety.

Takes and records patient information; reports all pertinent observations outside normal parameters and outcomes before during and after dialysis treatment to the professional staff. Records selected treatments and procedures as appropriate and within level of responsibility.

Assists to maintain patient flow through the outpatient area. May transport patients as necessary. Performs related errands to pick up and deliver supplies and test results as necessary including medical records x-rays and the like.

Receives and documents telephone messages. Monitors inventory levels to ensure availability of necessary supplies; equipment and instruments are on hand to meet anticipated needs. Orders and obtains supplies for specific area as directed; restock rooms appropriately in anticipation of scheduled visits. Ensures timely receipt of materials ordered follows patient information system.

May perform routine quality checks on equipment to ensure readiness for use. Exercises proper care in the use of equipment and reports needed for repair to the appropriate person. Operates computer terminal to access and enter information such as treatment information as part of the patient*s permanent record.

Participates in mandatory educational programs and in monthly staff meetings to maintain skills and awareness of dialysis-specific practice issues. Recommends changes in procedures to other professional staff as appropriate to maximize efficiency of clinic relative to patient scheduling clerical procedures etc.

Recognizes cardiopulmonary arrest and initiates CPR. Demonstrates adherence to Universal Precautions Safety Programs and other infection control measures.

Participates in appropriate staff education programs to maintain and expand job knowledge and skills.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

High School graduate General Educational Development (GED) certificate or equivalent.

BLS certification.

Have completed an approved training program in Renal Dialysis. Community or corporate-based programs are acceptable if the required components are included: the program is under the direction of a registered nurse: and the program has been approved by the medical director and governing body.

Must be certified or certification eligible under a nationally commercially available certification program the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) The Board of Nephrology Examiners for Nursing and Technology (BONENT) exam and the National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO) exam.

Successful completion of the Hospital*s patient care delivery orientation program which includes entry level credentialing of selected skills. Certification in Basic Life Support.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

At least 6 months prior related experience providing direct and indirect patient care duties and technical duties in an Outpatient Dialysis Center.

Demonstrated experience with computerized scheduling and record systems. Familiarity with preparing medical records effecting patient scheduling and operating a computer to enter and access medical records.

Meets and maintains competency requirements according to the nursing credentialing policy and procedures.
