The West Virginia University Institute of Technology at Beckley (WVU Tech), a divisional four-year campus of West Virginia University (WVU), is currently seeking applications for the following employment opportunity:

The Department of Civil Engineering within the Leonard C. Nelson School of Engineering seeks to hire an Assistant / Associate Professor in Civil Engineering. The nine-month contract position is full-time, tenure-track, and benefits-eligible.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach basic engineering mechanics courses as well as a variety of civil engineering courses such as structural analysis, steel design, reinforced concrete design, and upper-level elective structural engineering courses. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue scholarly activities which may include research opportunities with the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, or similar funding agencies. Other auxiliary duties include those normally associated with a faculty position in an ABET-accredited civil engineering program.

Anticipated Start Date: January 1, 2025 or until the position is filled.

WVU Tech is a four-year institution in Beckley, WV, with a supportive learning environment due to a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio and average class size of 17. The campus is close to numerous outdoor recreational opportunities, including state and national parks.

WVU Tech offers a broad array of degree programs including Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering; Construction Management; Computer Science and Information Systems. Six degree programs have current accreditation with ABET.

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field with an emphasis in structures is required. All But Dissertation (ABD) status will be considered, however the doctoral degree must be awarded by May 15, 2025.
  • An All But Dissertation (ABD) status will be considered, though the doctoral degree must be awarded within the first year of employment. If pertinent doctoral degree has not been awarded within the first year of employment, the incumbent will be given a terminal contract for the immediately following academic year.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence, responsiveness to student needs, and good communication skills are essential.
  • Interest in scholarship/research, service to the university and the profession, and developing relationships with the consulting industry and public entities such as the West Virginia Department of Highways are also essential.
  • To be considered at the Associate Professor rank, applicants must have a minimum of five years of higher education teaching experience.
