The Department of Neurosciences seeks a Health Sciences Research Tech 1 to perform research on the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure and opioids on neuroimmune function of the brain and spinal cord. The successful candidate will work with laboratory mouse models and will be involved in preparing primary cell cultures from tissues, cell stimulation and molecular biology assays (PCR, ELISA) for analysis of protein and RNA molecules. Research will also require data entry, analysis and graphics presentation. Following training, some involvement in neurobehavioral assessments under supervision will be required. Position responsibilities will also include placing online orders for laboratory supplies and maintaining inventories for chemicals/reagents. Some work on the weekends may be required. The successful applicant will be encouraged to build research skills to support room for promotion.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Will perform assays to measure protein and RNA from frozen tissues and primary cell culture samples.

* Will work with rodent models to collect blood samples and tissue samples.

* Will assist in conducting the experimental paradigm (e.g., alcohol exposure paradigm) and neurobehavior assays

* Will analyze data and prepare preliminary reports using graphics presentations in accordance with established protocol and procedural guidelines.

* Will participate in the design of routine experiments and placing online orders for laboratory items, maintaining instruments and procedures.

* Will practice safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.

* Will place online orders for laboratory reagents/supplies, maintaining instruments and maintain lab inventory.

* Will perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

The Health Sciences Research Tech 1 performs varied, routine technical tasks associated with the execution of health sciences laboratory, clinical, and/or field research protocol. Collects, processes, and coordinates a range of data, samples, and/or specimens, under established protocol regarding method, process, and technique. Performs varied laboratory/clinical tests, field interviews, and/or other research procedures. Performs preliminary data manipulation and assists in the execution of standard research protocol, as instructed. May participate in routine data analysis.

• For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.

High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of directly related student practicum or equivalent experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

* B.S. in Biology, Biochemistry or Psychology

* Experience with: Biomedical laboratory research, including RNA extraction, real time PCR, cell culture

* Working with laboratory animals and neurobehavioral experiments

* Ability to use scientific research software to analyze data and prepare statistical summaries and reports.

* Experience in trouble shooting and maintaining laboratory equipment

* Experience in placing orders for laboratory reagents
