Position Summary
The University of Georgia ( UGA) Animal and Dairy Science ( ADS) Department Large Animal Research Unit ( LARU) Facilities Manager position is a dynamic, fast-paced opportunity that oversees a state-of-the-art facility, staff and student workers, works with faculty and students to fulfill the department's research, teaching, and extension mission. This person coordinates the facility's operations including space allocation, day to day activities including training staff and students, arranging and assigning staff job duties and activities, ensuring compliance with IACUC, PHS, and AAALAC guidelines, and overseeing maintenance and cleaning of the facility. The manager will also be responsible for communicate effectively and work well with faculty, staff, and graduate students to ensure appropriate animal health including daily observation, feeding and weighing, assuring proper animal health through vaccinations, assigning daily pen cleaning, and ensuring biosecurity protocols are followed.

The individual will be responsible for the supervision of full-time and part-time staff, graduate students, and undergraduate student workers, including training, evaluation, and scheduling of work. They will also be responsible for implementing and supervising biosecurity and research protocols to ensure proper animal care and health, maintaining inventory and financial records including billing for per-diems, and assisting with procurement of feed ingredients, supplies, and equipment. The Facilities Manager will work with the senior farm manager, swine farm manager, faculty, and veterinarians to develop and implement standard operating procedures for all aspects of the operation. The manager will be expected to actively contribute to the department's research program including collecting biological samples and biometric data. Additional responsibilities include supporting teaching and outreach including assisting with teaching labs and tours.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work activities and the ability to supervise personnel involved in the daily operations.
  • Ability to use computer software to maintain records for management including MS Excel and Word.
  • Ability to fiscally manage the unit to ensure that it operates efficiently and within budget.
  • Large animal experience including managing, feeding, health, and general care.
  • Experience with swine.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with a small but diverse staff.
  • Animal husbandry experience.
  • Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting.

Physical Demands

  • Be available 24/7 as needed.
  • Handle livestock weighing up to a 600 pounds.
  • Climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials that weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • Work in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts for prolonged periods of time.
  • Driving vehicles such as trucks with trailer and large vans.

  • Overseeing and monitoring IACUC, PHS, AAALAC certified research animal facility that is a 24/7 operation.
  • Planning, scheduling, and being actively involved in the day-to-day activities of the unit
  • Overseeing and organizing incoming and outgoing shipments of animals
  • Managing facility spaces including housing, feed room, farrowing room, procedure spaces, and surgical room.
  • Assign and oversee setting up appropriate animal housing for specific species.
  • Document daily care, maintain animal health treatment, feed, and weight records, and order and maintain supplies.
  • Management of all required records and inventory to comply with all UGA, state, and federal policies.

  • Hire, train, and supervise of all undergraduate student employees who are assigned to the unit.
  • Oversee workforce management and professional development including:


o Schedules, approval of leave time, schedule holiday time off
o Performance of annual evaluations
o Work with employees to make sure they complete all mandatory training (ethic, right- to-know, etc.).
