JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Arboretum at Penn State along with The Office of Physical Plant are offering six paid ($14/hour) internships for Penn State students interested in career paths in horticulture and related disciplines. These are 40 hour/week positions with a 14-week term from May 12 - August 15, 2025, with option to extend into Fall 2025. Start and end dates are negotiable. Scheduled internship activities generally take place between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on weekdays with a few exceptions for professional development opportunities and field trips.

Experience:

Interns will learn horticultural and grounds management practices in a public garden setting, working side by side with OPP Horticulture and Arboretum staff to manage day-to-day garden operations throughout the growing season. Highlights include:

  • Installation of the Arboretum's summer floral display
  • Training in sustainable gardening techniques
  • Plant identification
  • Pruning techniques
  • Water feature maintenance
  • Supervision of volunteers
  • Skills training in the use of hand tools, utility vehicles and power equipment.

This internship also includes an educational component featuring weekly on-campus sessions and off-site field trips focusing on organization, groups and programs which pertain to all things plant, natural land preservation, education, public space, and community outreach.

Eligibility and Qualifications:

Applicants must be currently enrolled in either a undergraduate or graduate degree program. Academic coursework in horticulture, landscape contracting, landscape architecture, agriculture, plant science, or related fields is an asset.

Preference will be given to candidates who can explain how this opportunity will help them reach their career goals.
