Job Summary

The Piao Lab at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is a vibrant, medium sized basic science laboratory studying neuroimmune signaling and its role in brain development, neuropsychiatric diseases, and neurodegeneration. We are part of the Department of Pediatrics and the Weill Institute for Neuroscience, in the brand-new Weill Neurosciences Building on the Mission Bay campus of UCSF. The lab currently has one research scientist, 6 postdoctoral fellows, one graduate student, and three technical staff performing experiments in mice, human cells, and brain organoids, with the long-term goal of discovering new immune based therapies for disorders including autism, schizophrenia, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's Disease.

This position is for a Lab Manager that will help to coordinate and oversee the research activities of the lab. The lab manager will be a key part of the lab, coordinating and communicating with lab personnel and serving as a liaison between the lab and the PI. This will include scheduling and calendaring of lab events, presentations, and retreats. The lab manager will also manage equipment maintenance and repairs, take primary responsibility for organizing reagents and laboratory samples, and perform other tasks needed to keep the lab running efficiently and effectively. As a staff scientist, they will also undertake research projects in collaboration with the supervisor and make innovative contributions, conduct independent research projects in the lab, such as analysis of immune cell populations in the brain by flow cytometry, histology, and other approaches in the setting of brain pathologies.

The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational, administrative, social, and communication skills, will be able to independently troubleshoot and problem-solve daily laboratory challenges, and will possess a genuine interest in biomedical science and science administration. The candidate should have substantial prior bench and research experience, including in general molecular biology, immunology, and brain tissue histology.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $30.89 - $49.68 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS with a degree in a related science and two or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience in a biomedical research setting.
  • Experience working with rodents in a biomedical research setting.
  • Experience in Mouse breeding and colony management
  • Experience in Mouse genotyping by PCR
  • Experience in Mouse anesthesia and blood collection
  • Experience in Basic molecular biology including gene cloning and sequencing
  • Experience in Reporting
  • Experience in Organizational skills
  • Experience in Communication skills

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree or PhD preferred
  • Expertise in mutli-color flow cytometry of immune populations in the brain
  • Expertise in brain histology
  • Expertise in neuroimmunology
