Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati (UC) - Clermont College invites applications for an Assistant Professor - Educator in Geology position beginning fall semester of 2025. This position will not be sponsored. To apply for this position, you must be a US citizen or a valid US green card holder. UC Clermont is an open-admissions, regional campus of the University of Cincinnati located in Batavia, Ohio, with an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students. UC Clermont is committed to fostering diversity as well as intellectual, cultural and social development in our community. The College offers a variety of certificates, two-year technical degrees and transfer programs, along with a number of baccalaureate transfer programs.

Faculty responsibilities include teaching 12-credit hours per term, typically fall and spring semesters, and performing service to the Department, College, University, Community, and a willingness to participate and assist with departmental activities and needs. All master degree candidates must have their degree awarded prior to their first day of employment.

Teaching responsibilities include teaching both face-to-face and online courses ranging from pre -college to freshman and sophomore. It is a diverse student population which includes first-generation college students. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education that includes pre- college, freshmen and sophomore level courses. The department is committed to excellence in teaching and learning. Educator positions are expected to perform research/scholarship, and to continue developing professionally and aiding in service is of great importance. The initial length of appointment is typically for three years and continuous reappointment for lengths of one to seven years is possible based on program need, budget and performance. This position is also eligible for promotion to the associate and professor ranks within the Educator title.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct and teach assigned undergraduate level courses and seminars
  • Attend meetings, participate in governance, prepare materials for teaching
  • Evaluate and develop curriculum for department and/or college
  • Serve as an academic adviser for students and evaluate student coursework.
  • Serve on department, college or university committees and participate in curriculum development activities
  • Serve on committees, supervise laboratories (where appropriate), independent study activities, and off-campus learning
  • Engage in other activities ancillary to or in support of his or her responsibilities
  • Render service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual's academic specialty
  • Review, and where necessary, respond in a timely manner to all University-related communications
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Additional Essential Functions

  • Driving self and students for field trips (Driver's License and Experience driving large vehicles)
  • Map reading
  • Carrying specimens
  • Working with laboratory equipment and protocols
  • Working with other faculty, student, and community members
  • Participation & leadership for open houses, student gatherings, demonstrations, and school visits
  • Leading & designing field trips, some of which may be at a long distance and of a month or more in duration
  • Successful writing & design of lecture & laboratory courses including OT 36 Natural Science courses
  • Skills including GPS, geophysical, and other instrumentation and regulations for environmental sciences, mining, oil & gas, procedures or research, sample collection and chain of custody protocols
  • Preparation and presentation of student and own research at major forums

Required Education

A Master's Degree in geology from an accredited institution. At least 18 credit hours of geology must constitute a portion of this degree.

Required Experience

A minimum of one year of college-level teaching experience, which can comprise graduate school instruction where the candidate is the primary instructor rather than a recitation Teaching Assistant.

  • Capability & experience teaching introductory geography classes
  • Working toward the Ph.D. degree in geology from an accredited institution
  • Training or certification with instrumentation and protocols used in the field & laboratory by geologists or geographers

  • Experience in developing curriculum and a desire to be involved in various curricular development projects.
  • Experience in the field and in the laboratory in geology, geography and environmental sciences.
