Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate I (SRA I) will perform standard repetitive, technical laboratory and/or field experimental procedures and/or receive training in the more difficult procedures requiring a theoretical background in one scientific field under close technical supervision.

Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the SRA I will be involved in research centered on signaling mechanisms involved in the development of emphysema/COPD, including molecular and cellular studies in mammalian cell lines and primary cells as well as in vivo mouse models. This position will mainly be responsible for designing and implementing genetic strategies to delete important developmental pathways in the mouse lung to assess their role in the maintenance of normal lung architecture. This will involve the breeding and genotyping of mouse models, surgery and injections of animals, and the dissection of lung from experimental animals. The analyses involve standard cell and molecular biology methods that include cell culture, transfection, subcloning, RNA extraction and quantitative PCR, protein extraction and immunoprecipitation, tissue sectioning and immunofluorescent microscopy.

This position will be responsible for ordering lab supplies, reagents and antibodies. The SRA I will work with PI directly.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Program includes the UCSF Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine division (based at the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites), the Pulmonary and Critical Care divisions of the San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and at UCSF's Mission Bay campus. Each emphasizes different aspects of care for patients with lung disease and lung disease research. The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine have a long history of providing outstanding clinical care, performing innovative research and training academic scientists and physicians. We currently have active, well-funded clinical, translational and basic research programs in lung development, international lung health, pulmonary immunology, genetics of pulmonary and allergic diseases, lung transplantation, microbial pathogenesis, airway diseases, acute lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary malignancies and pulmonary health disparities. Our large, NIH training grant has been continuously funded since 1966. Nearly a quarter of all academic pulmonologists in the United States have trained at UCSF. This combined unit includes: 7 outpatient clinics, 4 inpatient services, a pulmonary function diagnostic center, 15 independent wet labs, 4 independent research service cores, 6 independent clinical research units, one specialty destination program, and the Nina Ireland Program in Lung Health focusing on philanthropic activities.

Required Qualifications

• BA/BS degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Knowledge via academic experience in cell/molecular biology as well as mouse handling, including cell culture, immunoprecipitation, immunostaining, DNA cloning and PCR
• Willingness and ability to work with small animals / mice
• Careful attention to detail. Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook of experiments done on a daily basis
• Excellent organizational skills and multitasking
• Excellent organizational, time management, administrative, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated proficiency in mammalian cell culture and primary cell isolation from animal tissues, as obtained through schooling. Techniques including maintenance of cell lines, transfection techniques, isolation of RNA and cDNA
• Demonstrated proficiency working with mice

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as cloning and various DNA / RNA manipulations.
• Demonstrated proficiency in immunofluorescent microscopy
• Computer skills at the level of using spreadsheet programs
• Sound quantitative skills
• Experience handling mice
• Familiarity with Flow Cytometry
