Summary of Position The Pathologist will diagnose the presence and stage of diseases using laboratory techniques and patient specimens. Key Job Elements
- Examines microscopic samples to identify diseases or other abnormalities. Diagnoses diseases and studies medical conditions using techniques such as gross pathology, histology, cytology, cytopathology, clinical chemistry, immunology, flow cytometry, and molecular biology.
- Identifies the etiology, pathogenesis, morphological change, and clinical significance of diseases. Writes pathology reports summarizing analyses, results, and conclusions.
- Analyzes and interprets results from tests.
- Communicates pathologic findings to surgeons or other physicians.
- Reads literature, talks with peers, and participates in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in pathology.
- Consult with physicians about ordering and interpreting tests or providing treatments.
- Reviews cases by analyzing laboratory findings and case investigation reports.
- Plan and supervise the work of the pathology staff, residents, or visiting pathologists.
- Educate physicians, students, and other staff in medical laboratory professions such as medical technology, cytotechnology, and histotechnology.
- Manage medical laboratories.
Qualifications
Knowledge/Experience
- MD degree is required.
- Board certification in Pathology.
- Fifteen plus (15+) years of experience in the field of Pathology.
- Proficient in diagnostic hematopathology practice, including flow cytometry, bone marrow interpretation, immunohistochemistry, and molecular hematopathology.
- Proficient in clinical interpretations.
- Experience signing out complex surgical pathology cases.
- Experience writing pathology reports detailing specimens tested, results of tests, and the final diagnosis.
- Experience suggesting potential treatment options.
- Experience looking for abnormalities in samples that evidence disease and conveying this information to the relevant medical practitioner.
- Experience performing specimen analysis by using laboratory tools and equipment.
- Experience studying samples and performing tests to accurately analyze bodily fluids and tissue specimens.
- Research experience to improve identification and testing methods and find innovative ways to treat disease.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and biology.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Prolonged periods of standing and bending.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
